BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University is continuing its look back at its 2023-24 athletic campaign. The next entry in our second countdown of the summer – the Top 10 Stories of the Year selected by the athletic administration – is our No. 8 highlight – five Moravian student-athletes honored as Landmark Conference Athletes of the Year in respective sports.
The first to win the honor last fall was junior Nathan Hajel, who was named the Landmark Men's Cross Country Performer of the Year after winning the 2023 individual title and guiding the Greyhounds to their third straight Landmark Conference Championship. Hajel finished the 8,000-meter course in Huntingdon on Friday, October 27 in a time of 26:08.02 to capture the title by four and a half seconds. Junior defender Hailey Scaff was awarded the Landmark Women's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Year honor in November. She helped Moravian to an 8-5-4 record with a 5-2-2 slate in Landmark Conference action to qualify for the 2023 Landmark Conference Tournament. Scaff had her first career goal last fall to go with an assists, and she anchored a defense that allowed just 0.88 goals per match over the 17 contests. Junior attack Jackie Salvatore garnered the Landmark Women's Lacrosse Offensive Athlete of the Year award as she helped the Hounds to an 8-10 slate with a 5-4 Landmark Conference record as Moravian played n the Landmark Conference Tournament for the sixth consecutive year. Salvatore set the school record with 109 points this spring on 52 goals and a program record 58 assists, and she added 91 draw controls, 32 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers this season. Graduate student Tim King was named the Landmark Men's Outdoor Field Performer of the Year after helping Moravian to a runner-up finish at the Landmark Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 4-5. King won the hammer throw with a toss of 49.52 meters (162-5) and he scored a total of 22 points in the meet, adding a third place finish in the discus at 42.85 meters (140-7) and a third place in the shot put at 14.02 meters (46-0) during the two-day meet. Junior Abby Giamoni was selected as Landmark Women's Outdoor Track Performer of the Year after recording 23 points and helping the Hounds to a third place finish at the Landmark Conference Outdoor Championships on May 4-5. Giamoni won the 200-meter dash in 25.75 seconds and the 400-meter dash at 57.15 seconds, and she also earned points while running a leg on the third place 4x100-meter relay in 49.27 seconds and the third place 4x400-meter relay in 4:11.57.
