TEMPE, Ariz. --- Twelve student-athletes from the Moravian University men's and women's tennis teams have been selected as 2024 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athletes and both the men's and women's squads also received the ITA All-Academic Team award.
Senior Steve Schneider, juniors Zachary Lebby and Wyatt Marshall and sophomores Shayaan Farhad and Matthew Labosky from the men's team and seniors Gabby Martin and Megan O'Brien, sophomore Izzy Szmodis and freshmen Ali Bender, Julia Bergman, Sydney Shifman and Leah Zolotareva from the women's squad were named ITA Scholar-Athletes.
"We always strive to earn team ITA-Academic honors as well as individual recognition for outstanding achievements in the classroom. I'm incredibly proud of both teams for accomplishing this goal," stated Director of Tennis Mariana Freitas.
For a student-athlete to ITA Scholar-Athlete honors, they must maintain at least a 3.50 GPA, earn a varsity letter and be enrolled for at least two semesters. Thousands of student-athletes across all divisions were honored with ITA Scholar-Athlete status and hundreds of teams earned the ITA All-Academic Team award for maintaining at least a 3.20 GPA. All varsity letter winners were factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2023 and spring 2024).
Schneider posted a 5-0 record in singles and a 3-0 slate in doubles action this season while Lebby went 5-6 in doubles play and 1-0 in singles action. Marshall was named to the 2024 Landmark All-Conference Honorable Mention squad after an 8-9 mark in singles matches, and he was 12-9 in doubles contests. Farhad was selected to the Landmark All-Conference Second Team in singles and doubles this year after posting records of 9-9 at first singles and 8-8 in doubles action. Labosky recorded a 3-1 singles mark and a 7-7 doubles slate this season.
Martin was 13-6 in singles action and 6-1 in doubles play this past season while O'Brien went 3-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles. Szmodis was named to the 2024 Landmark All-Conference First Team in singles and Second Team in doubles after recording records of 11-5 in singles action and 15-5 in doubles play while Bender earned spots on the Landmark All-Conference Second Team in singles and Honorable Mention squad in doubles with marks of 12-2 in singles and 9-3 in doubles. Shifman posted a 14-1 singles slate and a 14-4 doubles record in her debut season while Zolotareva made the Landmark All-Conference First Team in singles and Honorable Mention squad in doubles after posting an 11-7 singles mark and a 13-4 doubles record.
