LANGHORNE, Pa. --- The Moravian College men's basketball squad posted its first win of the shortened 2021 season with an 88-80 non-conference win at Cairn University Monday evening as senior guard Keith Otto scored a career-high 30 points for the Greyhounds.
How It Happened
- The Highlanders opened the scoring and had the early lead until freshman guard Alex Dietz connected on a three-pointer for a 10-8 edge for the Hounds. Moravian would extend that lead out to eight points at 22-14 after a three-pointer from sophomore guard Greg Eck with 11:31 to go in the first half.
- Cairn closed within a point before the Blue and Grey pushed the advantage back to seven points, 30-23, on a three-pointer from Otto at the 9:11 mark. Cairn answered with the next eight points to take a 31-30 lead, but the Greyhounds came right back with a 16-2 run as a pair of free throws from senior guard Matt O'Connor had Moravian leading 46-33 with 3:26 until the intermission. However, the Hounds scored just one more point as the Highlanders finished the have with a 16-1 run to head to the locker room with a 49-47 lead
- Cairn scored the first three points of the second half for a five-point edge and the Highlanders were up 54-49 at the 17:33 mark before a three-point play from O'Connor and a three-pointer by Eck put the Blue and Grey back on top 55-54. The teams traded the lead eight times over the next 10 minutes before the Hounds moved back ahead at 73-71 on a three-pointer from Eck with 4:57 to go
- The score was knotted for the 11th time in the game at 75-75 as the squads headed to the final three minutes. Otto drained back-to-back three-pointers and Dietz connected on a lay-up as Moravian pulled ahead to an 83-75 advantage with just 1:20 remaining
Firsts for the Hounds
- Otto reached 30 points for the first time in his career, surpassing his previous career-best of 23 points from December 2019
- The victory was the first of the year for Moravian, which is scheduled to finish the regular season with five games between February 20-27.
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian had four players in double figures in the game led by Otto's 30 points. Eck tossed in 17 points while O'Connor had 16 points and Dietz scored 10 points
- Otto was 12-for-18 from the floor, 4-for-7 behind the three-point line and 2-for-2 at the foul line on his career night, and he also tied his career-best with eight rebounds
- Freshman guard C.J. Weber netted a career-high five points for the Hounds
- The Blue and Grey made a season-high 15 three-pointers and had their best shooting night of the year beyond the arc, going 15-for-32 (46.9 percent). Eck was 5-for-7 on three-pointers as he and Otto combined to go 9-for-14 from long distance
- Moravian committed a season-low 10 turnovers while forcing the Highlanders into 22 turnovers. The Greyhounds picked up 22 points off of those turnovers
