TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian University sophomore Ryan Burke has been honored as the Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week for his performance last week.
Burke posted a 2-0 mark to help the Greyhounds defeat The University of Catholic, 5-4, to clinch the third seed in the 2024 Landmark Conference Tournament. After a six-plus hour delay due to weather and the schedule at the indoor facility, Burke and freshman Gavin Labbadia combined for an 8-7 (7-5) win at third doubles for the Hounds' only point in doubles action. With time limited at the indoor facility, Burke played just a pro-set at sixth singles and posted an 8-4 victory to clinch the match and home playoff contest.
"This is a well-deserved recognition for Ryan," noted Director of Tennis Mariana Freitas. "It was a long day of tennis on Saturday with several rain delays and a 6-hour wait until match time. It certainly was tough on the team to perform at a high level, but Ryan is always eager to compete, and despite the long wait, he was ready to go, and put out an outstanding performance in both singles and doubles."
The Greyhounds, who are 16-4 overall to tie the school record for wins in a season, are slated to return to action on Wednesday, May 1 when Moravian hosts Wilkes University in a Landmark Conference Tournament First Round match at Hoffman Courts beginning at 4:00 p.m.
