Men's Soccer Falls to Scranton as Moravian Dedicates John Makuvek Field

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to the University of Scranton Saturday evening to open the 2016 Landmark Conference season, and prior to the start of the contest, Moravian officially dedicated John Makuvek Field.

The field was switched from a natural grass surface to synthetic Field Turf over the summer, and the project also had lights and a press box added to the complex that will host Moravian's field hockey and men's and women's lacrosse teams in addition to the men's and women's soccer programs. John Makuvek served as Moravian's head men's soccer coach for 24 seasons and amassed a 219-134-31 record with two NCAA appearances. Makuvek was also golf coach for 43 years with a 316-193 record and also spent time as Director of Athletics at Moravian.

The Royals had the first two shots in the match and took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute. Junior midfielder Connor Phillips was wide of the goal in the 34th minute for the Greyhounds, but Moravian would find the equalizer three minutes later. Sophomore forward Koshane Marshall dribbled down the right side of the field, almost to the goal line before crossing the ball. Marshall's cross found sophomore defender Rocky Fatuova on the far post, and Fatuova headed the pass into the net for his first goal of the season that tied the contest.

Scranton was on the attack early in the second half and broke the tie in the 61st minute. The Greyhounds nearly got the equalizer again from Fatuova seven minutes later when his header hit the cross bar off of a corner kick. Freshman midfielder Jack Dugan had another header in the 80th minute that needed to be saved but the Blue and Grey were unable to tie the contest.

Moravian junior goalie Bryan Yaskowski had three saves in the match.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, September 28 in a non-conference road match at Hood College beginning at 4:00 p.m.
