No. 19 Greyhounds Sweep Scranton in Landmark Conference Action

JESSUP, Pa. --- The No. 19 ranked Moravian College softball team earned a sweep of host The University of Scranton in Landmark Conference action Saturday, winning the opener 8-5 and taking the night cap 11-0 in five innings.

The Hounds had 13 hits in the first game with junior first baseman Abby Jeffries going 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs. Freshman shortstop Kaela Kane and junior designated player Victoria Conner were each 2-for-4 with solo homers.

Sophomore Josie Novak improved to 8-1 in the circle after allowing five runs on eight hits and four walks to go with five strikeouts as she moved into a tie for seventh in school history with 236 career strikeouts.

Kane gave Moravian a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a one-out solo homer to left field, her second home run of the season. The Hounds would extend the lead to 4-0 with a three-run second inning. Freshman third baseman Madison Shaneberger reached on an error and scored on a two-run homer by Jeffries to left center field. Conner followed with a solo home run to left field, her fourth homer of the season.

The Hounds added two runs in the top of the third inning for a 6-0 lead when junior outfielder Julie Siragusa scored on an illegal pitch and Shaneberger ripped an RBI double. Scranton would score once in the bottom of the third before Jeffries connected on her second two-run homer of the game, and her fourth home run of the season in the top of the fifth for an 8-1 lead. The Royals scored twice in the fifth and twice in the seventh to finish off the scoring in the opener.

In the second game, sophomore Amanda Carisone scattered three hits and did not allow a walk as she improved to 7-2 in the circle this season. Carisone also had two strikeouts in the victory.

Moravian pounded out 12 hits in the second contest with senior outfielder Mary Schlosbon going 3-for-4. Sophomore catcher Janae Matos was 2-for-2 in the game with three RBIs while Jeffries drove in another three runs. Freshman second baseman Julia DeMarco was also 2-for-3 in the game.

The Blue and Grey scored five times in the top of the first inning. Schlosbon, who scored four times in the game, crossed the plate on an error before Jeffries ripped a three-RBI double. Conner added an RBI single later in the inning.

Moravian scored once in second inning when Schlosbon tripled and scored on an RBI single from Kane, and the Hounds added a run in the third when Matos led off with a solo home run, her third homer of the season. The Greyhounds chased three runs across the plate in the top of the fourth on an RBI fielder's choice off of Siragusa's bat and a two-RBI single from Matos. The Hounds' final run came in the top of the fifth inning when Siragusa hit an RBI single to score Schlosbon, who had doubled earlier in the frame.

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Thursday, March 31 in a non-conference doubleheader at Wilkes University beginning at 3:00 p.m.
