No. 21 Hounds Sweep 4th Straight Doubleheader with Two Wins at Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The No. 21-ranked Moravian College softball team swept its fourth straight doubleheader to run its winning streak to a season-high eight games as the Greyhounds defeated host Elizabethtown College, 8-1 and 7-1, in Landmark Conference action Saturday afternoon.

The Hounds, now 19-3 overall and 5-1 in Landmark Conference play, had 15 hits in the opener with junior designated player Victoria Conner going 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Freshman outfielder Kat Spilman and sophomore first baseman Jean Markovic were each 2-for-3 while freshman third baseman Madison Shaneberger was 2-for-4 and senior outfielder Mary Schlosbon went 2-for-5.

Sophomore Josie Novak improved to 10-1 in the circle as she allowed just one unearned run on five hits and four walks to go along with seven strikeouts.

The Blue and Grey jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a two-RBI double from freshman shortstop Kaela Kane and an RBI sacrifice fly off of the bat of junior outfielder Julie Siragusa. The Hounds extended the lead to 5-0 with two more runs in the top of the third inning as freshman third baseman Julia DeMarco ripped an RBI single and Kane drove in another run as she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Moravian pushed the lead to 6-0 in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Conner, and the Greyhounds scored twice more in the top of the sixth for an 8-0 advantage on a two-RBI single off of Conner's bat. The Blue Jays would score once in the home half of the sixth to finish the scoring in the opening contest.

The Hounds added 13 more hits in the second contest with both DeMarco and Spilman going 2-for-3. Kane and Siragusa turned in 2-for-4 games at the plate with Siragusa, Spilman and Shaneberger each driving in two runs.

Sophomore Amanda Carisone earned her ninth win of the season in the circle for the Blue and Grey with a run on five hits and a walk to go with five strikeouts.

Moravian once again took a lead in the top of the second inning of game two, this time a 1-0 advantage when Spilman led off the inning with a solo homer to left field, her second home run of the season. The Greyhounds added four more runs in the top of the third for a 5-0 edge. Siragusa drove in a pair of runs with a two-RBI double, and she would cross the plate on a two-run homer off of Shaneberger's bat, her second home run of the season.

The Hounds scored a run in the fifth as Siragusa tripled and scored on Spilman's RBI single, and Moravian plated its final run in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single from Schlosbon. Elizabethtown scored its only run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth frame.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Thursday, April 7 when the squad travels to rival Muhlenberg College for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
