No. 21 Moravian Sweeps Wilkes in Non-Conference Action

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. --- The No. 21 ranked Moravian College softball team posted a non-conference sweep at Wilkes University Thursday, winning 6-1 and 4-1, as the Greyhounds reached the midpoint of the season with a 17-3 overall record after winning their last six games.

The Hounds had seven hits in the opener with freshman Kat Spilman going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

Sophomore Amanda Carisone earned the win in the circle to improve to 8-2 on the year as she allowed a run on four hits with no walks to go with five strikeouts.

The Colonels jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Moravian would answer back with two runs in the top of the second inning to take the lead for good. The Hounds scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by junior designated hitter Victoria Conner and an error by Wilkes.

The Greyhounds would take a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning when junior outfielder Julie Siragusa raced home on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. Moravian finished off the scoring in the opener with three runs in the top of the sixth inning when Siragusa drew a bases loaded walk to drive in a run before Spilman connected on a two-RBI single.

Sophomore Josie Novak earned the win in the circle in the second game as she improved to 9-1 on the year. Novak allowed a run on two hits and two walks to go along with seven strikeouts.

Moravian pounded out 11 hits in the second contest with Siragusa going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a double and a homer. Senior outfielder Mary Schlosbon and freshman third baseman Madison Shaneberger were both 2-for-4.

Wilkes took another 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in the second game, and once again, the Greyhounds answered with a two-run second inning. Conner had an RBI single in the inning with the second run scoring on an error on the play.

Moravian scored its other two runs in the top of the fifth inning when Siragusa launched a two-run homer to right field, her second home run of the season.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, April 2 in a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Elizabethtown College beginning at 1:00 p.m.
