No. 6 Greyhounds Sweep Staten Island in Non-Conference Action

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. --- The No. 6-ranked Moravian College softball team went on the road and swept another non-conference doubleheader, defeating host the College of Staten Island, 2-1 and 8-0, Saturday.

The Greyhounds, now 25-3 on the year, had seven hits in the opening game with sophomore left fielder Lauren Goetz and freshman second baseman Shannon Brogan each going 2-for-3.

Senior Josie Novak improved to 12-2 in the circle on the year as she allowed one run on four hits and three walks to go with 11 strikeouts.

The Hounds broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning. Junior center fielder Kat Spilman led off with frame with a single and Brogan followed with a single. After a double play, senior first baseman Jean Markovic connected on an RBI single to score Brogan.

Moravian scored what ended up being the winning run in the fifth inning as Goetz led off the at-bat with a solo home run, her first homer of the season. The Dolphins would get a run in the bottom of the sixth inning but no more.

The Hounds added eight more hits in the second contest with senior catcher Janae Matos going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and junior designated player Julia DeMarco posting a 2-for-4 game with two RBIs.

Senior Amanda Carisone scattered three hits to go along with four strikeouts as she improved to 13-1 on the season.

The Blue and Grey scored twice in the top of the fourth inning to give Carisone all of the offense she needed. DeMarco started the frame with a single and after Brogan reached on an error, Matos would hit a two-RBI single.

The Hounds added four more runs in the top of the fifth inning for a 6-0 edge. Sophomore left fielder Emily Stanilious led off with a walk and freshman right fielder Brooke Wehr singled. After an error, DeMarco ripped a two-RBI single to score Stanilious and Wehr. Brogan added a single and a fielder's choice loaded the bases for an RBI single by Matos scored DeMarco. Markovic finished off the inning with an RBI ground out as Spilman raced home.

Moravian finished off the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning as Spilman led off with a single before junior Ashley Gindle came on to pinch run. Matos connected on another single before an RBI fielder's choice by Markovic chased Gindle across the plate. Senior pinch runner Jackie Marshall scored the final run as she raced home on an RBI ground out by freshman shortstop Maddisen Bieber.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, April 24 in a non-conference doubleheader versus Stevens Institute of Technology beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Blue & Grey Field in Bethlehem.
