Wright Named Landmark Conference Player of the Week

TOWSON, Md. – Junior forward Alexis Wright of the Moravian College women's basketball team has been named the Landmark Conference Player of the Week for her performance during the period ending on Nov. 24.

Wright led the Greyhounds (3-1) to a perfect 2-0 week while averaging 23.5 points per game, 12 rebounds per game and five blocks per contest. Moravian outlasted The College of New Jersey in a gritty road shootout, 86-81, on Wednesday before erasing a 12-point deficit against Albright College to win its home opener 72-62 on Saturday.

Against TCNJ on Wednesday, Wright recorded career-highs with 31 points on 11-21 shooting from the floor and six blocks. When Greyhound senior point guard Katie O'Rourke left the game with an injury in the first half, head coach Mary Beth Spirk saw Wright take the game into her own hands.

"She made sure we weren't going to lose that game," Spirk said. "If she wants to be that kind of dominant player, that's what she has to do. Against Albright, it was the same thing. She struggled a little bit early and got frustrated after being doubled a few times, but she is just relentless. It's not just her scoring points; it's her rebounding, her blocking shots and her presence in the paint."

With the Greyhounds down 12 against Albright on Saturday in Johnston Hall, Wright led the charge during a 30-9 Moravian run to not only come back, but take a lead for good. The junior forward scored 16 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked four shots – all team highs – for her third double-double of the season.

Wright also led the team in minutes played in both contests last week with 33 in each game.

"We were really struggling without Katie O'Rourke, so we asked Alexis to do a little more," Spirk said. "Alexis just stepped up. After the game, she made a comment that she wasn't that tired, which made me smile because now I have to tell her to score 40; that way she'll be tired after a game."

Wright and the Greyhounds return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 26 with the short trip to DeSales University for a 6 p.m. tipoff. Moravian returns home to Johnston Hall for the annual rivalry game with Muhlenberg College on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. The Matte Award game against the Mules will be a White Out as the Greyhounds encourage all fans to wear white in support of Moravian women's basketball.
