Women’s Basketball Receiving Attention in National Polls

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Moravian College women's basketball team received votes for the sixth straight week in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, and received its first votes in the WBCA/USA TODAY Sports Division III Women's Basketball Top 25 poll since Dec. 10.

The Greyhounds (12-2) have won four straight and are 3-0 in the Landmark Conference. The Moravian women tallied 25 points in this week's D3hoops.com poll, moving up to just one spot outside the Top 25. Head coach Mary Beth Spirk's squad received five points in the WBCA/USA TODAY poll, four spots shy of the Top 25.

"This should serve as that last bit of motivation to put some wins together to reach the Top 25," said Spirk, who will attempt to become just the 21st coach in DIII women's basketball history to notch her 500th career win on Wednesday night at Drew University. "That kind of recognition would be well-deserved after a total team effort and lots of hard work this season. Cracking the Top 25 is something every player, coach, alumnus and member of the community can be proud of."

The Greyhounds' only two losses came on the road to nationally-ranked teams this season. Moravian fell to then-No. 19 Trinity (Texas) University and then-No. 11 Montclair State University. Trinity is currently ranked No. 25 and Montclair State holds the No. 10 spot in the D3hoops.com poll.

Moravian owns a 71-59 win over Juniata College, which was ranked No. 23 by D3hoops.com before falling out after the loss. The Hounds also scored a 69-60 victory over DeSales University, which received 10 points in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, and an 86-81 win against The College of New Jersey, recipients of two points in the same poll.

The Greyhounds face Drew on the road at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 15 before traveling to The Catholic University of America on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 4 p.m. Catholic received 11 points in the D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25 Poll and currently owns a 9-3 overall record and 2-0 mark in the Landmark Conference.
