Hounds Rally Falls Short in Loss to Susquehanna to Open Landmark Conference Season

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian College sophomore midfielder/attack Jillian Picciuto netted her 100th career goal but it wasn't enough as the Greyhounds dropped their 2017 Landmark Conference opener to Susquehanna University, 15-10, on John Makuvek Field Saturday.

The Greyhounds, who are now 5-3 on the year, were playing their first Landmark Conference match since the 2010 season.

Freshman midfielder Liz Bill and sophomore attack Jessica Pisano each had three goals in the match for the Hounds while Picciuto had two goals and four assists. Picciuto is now fifth in school history with 100 goals, first in assists with 60 and second with 160 points. Freshman midfielder Allie Brembt also scored a pair of goals in the match.

Sophomore goalie Kelley Gavin recorded 14 saves in the match for the Blue and Grey while junior midfielder Alexis Kersten had four ground balls, five caused turnovers and a pair of draw controls. Bill contributed four draw controls and three ground balls while Picciuto had three draw controls and two ground balls. Brembt and sophomore attack Dalia Aguilar each added a pair of draw controls and ground balls while junior midfielder Kristen Baxter had three ground balls.

Pisano scored just 43 seconds into the match to give Moravian a 1-0 lead before the River Hawks tied the match. Bill would give the Hounds a 2-1 edge just over seven minutes into action but Susquehanna needed just 42 seconds to tie the contest and start a run of three goals. The River Hawks moved ahead 7-3 before Picciuto set up Pisano twice and the scored her milestone goal to cut the deficit to 7-6 with 1:31 left in the first half. Susquehanna scored a late goal to head to the intermission with an 8-6 lead.

The River Hawks netted the first two goals of the second half before Brembt tallied twice to make it 10-8. Susquehanna would add four more goals before Bill found the back of the net twice in the final 13 minutes.

Moravian is slated to return to action on Tuesday, April 4 in a non-conference match at SUNY Purchase beginning at 4:00 p.m.
