DALLAS, Pa. --- The seventh seed Moravian College women's lacrosse dropped a 12-10 decision to host and second seed Misericordia University in the 2017 ECAC Division III Championship Tournament First Round Wednesday evening.
The Greyhounds, who were playing in their first-ever postseason contest, finish the year with a 7-9 mark.
"I'm proud of our performance tonight for our first postseason appearance," stated Head Coach Kristen Nicholson. "We played hard until the end. This team fought relentlessly every game all season, always until the final whistle. I'm thrilled to have reached our team goals and some impressive individual goals as well. We're excited and anxiously awaiting next season to come back even stronger and with the experience we need to reach the next level."
Junior midfielder/attack Jillian Picciuto led the Hounds with five goals and an assist to give her 103 points on the season, breaking the school record of 102 she set last year, and 205 points in her career, the first player in school history to hit the 200-point milestone. Freshman midfielder Liz Bill added two goals while junior midfielder Kristen Baxter, sophomore attack Jessica Pisano and junior midfielder Kylie McGovern each found the back of the goal once. Freshman defender Allie Fisher added one assist.
Sophomore goalie Kelley Gavin recorded 11 saves for the Greyhounds while Fisher had seven ground balls and five caused turnovers. Freshman midfielder Allie Brembt contributed three ground balls and three caused turnovers while Bill had a pair of draw controls.
The Cougars scored the first three goals of the match before Bill got Moravian on the scoreboard just over 10 minutes into action. After allowing Misericordia another two goals, Picciuto netted her first goal of the night and the 200th point of her career with 14 minutes before the intermission, and she added two more goals and one from Baxter had the match knotted at 5-5 at halftime.
Misericordia opened the second half with two goals and took a lead it would not relinquish. Trailing by four goals with ten minutes to play, the Greyhounds scored three of the final four goals to get within two points before running out of time.
