Lawton & Margiottiello Named ECAC Division III Metro Women's Soccer Players of the Week

DANBURY, Conn. --- Moravian College senior forward Valentina Margiottiello and junior goalie Jessica Lawton have been named the ECAC Division III Metro Women's Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for their performances last week.

]The duo, who also earned Landmark Conference Women's Soccer Offensive and Defensive Athletes of the Week accolades on Monday, helped the Greyhounds to a 2-0-1 week including the championship at the Drew University Fall Festival this past weekend when the team went 1-0-1.

Margiottiello netted three of Moravian's five goals during the week, and she contributed an assist for a total of seven points. Margiottiello scored two goals including finding the net on a penalty kick in the Greyhounds' 3-1 win over Penn State-Harrisburg last Wednesday evening at John Makuvek Field. She netted the opening goal in a 2-1 victory over Stockton University to begin the Drew Fall Festival on Saturday.

"Val had a great week and her hard work in the offseason allows her to play at a very high level for 90 minutes," stated Head Coach Jeff Ykoruk. "Her ability to play multiple positions in the attacking third really makes her even more difficult to match up with. She had been under the weather most of the week, which really makes what she did even more impressive."

Lawton posted a 2-0-1 record for the week while recording eight saves with a 0.37 goals-against average and one shutout. Lawton played the opening 45 minutes in the match versus Penn State-Harrisburg, and she earned her second straight win with four stops in the victory over Stockton. Lawton finished the week with her first career shutout as she made four saves in a 0-0, double-overtime draw against Rutgers-Camden in the final match of the Drew Fall Fesitval.

"Jess has been improving everyday," Ykoruk said. "She has been working very hard with our keeper coach and her confidence continues to increase.  We will need her to steal us a game this year and if she continues to develop, she will be in position to do so."

Moravian, now 2-1-1 on the year, is slated to return to the pitch on Wednesday, September 14 in a non-conference match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
