Roethke Joins 100-Hit Club But Hounds Fall at Hampden-Sydney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --- Senior catcher Mike Roethke became the 29th member of the Moravian College baseball program's 100-hit club with a single in the seventh inning but the Greyhounds ended up dropping their 2016 season opener, 8-1, in the squad's first game of the Hampden-Sydney College Classic Saturday afternoon as the Hounds fell to the host Tigers.

Junior outfielder Anthony Gaetaniello led Moravian at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance while Roethke, senior first baseman Charles Savite, senior third baseman Alex Bull, senior designated hitter Cameron Leon, junior second baseman Nicolas Ampietro and freshmen outfielders Mike Mittl and Austin Markowski each had one hit in the contest.

The Greyhounds scored their run in the top of the seventh inning with Roethke getting things going with a one-out single. Sophomore La'Ron Smith came on to pinch run for Roethke and SMith moved to second on a single from Ampietro. Gaetaniello would drive in Smith with an RBI single.

Sophomore Dan Morrin started on the mound for Moravian and tossed the first four innings with one strikeout and taking the loss. Sophomore Ryan Kahn pitched the final four innings in relief with four strikeouts.

Moravian will close out its trip to the Hampden-Sydney Classic with a pair of games on Sunday, February 28 as the Greyhounds are set to play York College of Pennsylvania at 11:00 a.m. and host Hampden-Sydney again at 3:00 p.m.
