Hounds' Early Lead Slips Away in Loss to No. 18 Marietta

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. --- The Moravian College baseball team jumped out to a 1-0 lead on No. 18 Marietta (Ohio) College in the top of the first inning but the Greyhounds would allow seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings and fall to the Pioneers by a final of 7-1 in non-conference action in Winter Haven, Florida Tuesday.

Junior outfielder Anthony Gaetaniello led off the game with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a wild pitch. Gaetaniello eventually scored on an RBI ground out by junior second baseman Nicolas Ampietro; however, that would be the only offense the Greyhounds would have in the game. Senior catcher Mike Roethke led Moravian at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance.

Marietta took advantage of a pair of errors by the Greyhounds to score two unearned runs in the in the bottom of the seventh, and the Pioneers added five more runs off of the Hounds' bullpen in the eighth.

Freshman Rhett Jacoby started on the mound for Moravian and set down the first nine batters in order including six strikeouts. Jacoby struck out eight over 7.1 innings of action, and he allowed five runs, just two earned on six hits while not allowing a walk. Sophomore Ryan Kahn tossed a third of an inning with an unearned run and a walk while sophomore Clay Weidemoyer pitched the final third of an inning with an unearned run on one hit.

Moravian is slated to play a pair of games in the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida on Wednesday, March 9 as the Greyhounds are set to face Ohio Wesleyan University at 11:00 a.m. and Bluffton University at 3:00 p.m.
