Baseball Opens Home Season with 5-4 Win Over Rival Muhlenberg

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team opened up the home portion of is 2016 schedule with a victory over rival Muhlenberg College Wednesday afternoon, in a game that was delayed for a half an hour due to lightning. The Greyhounds took a 5-4 win over the Mules.

Leading the Greyhounds on the mound was senior pitcher Ian Carbone, who pitched five and a third innings only allowing two earned runs and six hits while striking out eight batters. With the win Carbone moves to 1-0 on the season. Getting the save for Moravian was freshman Rhett Jacoby, who struck out all three batters he faced.

"It's always great to get a win versus Muhlenberg especially when you are playing on back-to-back days," stated Head Coach Paul Engelhardt. "I thought we did a lot of really good things throughout the course of the game but we also definitely have some things we need to work on too. We are looking forward to our game tomorrow and that will hopefully prepare us to open Landmark Conference play versus Catholic."

At the plate, the Greyhounds got help from freshmen outfielder Mike Mittl and second base Tim Heard. Mittl went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI while Heard grabbed one hit for two important RBIs for the Blue and Grey. Also having a big bat for the Hounds were seniors first baseman Charles Savite and third baseman Alex Bull. Savite had one hit and an RBI while Bull had one hit, an RBI and scored one run.

Moravian started off strong grabbing two runs in the first inning coming from the bats of Savite and Bull. The game would get bogged down in the bottom of the second when the umpires had to put the game into a lightning delay. The game would go back-and-forth as both pitchers dueled it out on the mound. The Greyhounds would go up 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth of a single by Mittl that scored senior catcher Mike Roethke from third base. Moravian would grab its final two runs in the bottom of the fifth when Heard doubled to right field allowing Roethke and Bull to score.

The Greyhounds will take on New Jersey City University on Thursday, March 17 at 3:30 p.m. at Gillespie Field. On Saturday, March 19 the Blue and Grey will open up Landmark Conference play versus the Catholic University of America at 1:00 p.m. at Gillespie Field.
