BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team won its second straight game this week with a 6-4 non-conference victory over New Jersey City University a Gillespie Field Thursday afternoon. With the win the Greyhounds improve to 6-6 heading into the start of Landmark Conference play.
Getting the start on the mound for the Blue and Grey was sophomore Ryan Kahn, who pitched four scoreless innings and struck out two batters. Coming in for relief in the fifth inning was senior Anthony Zaloga, who only gave up one hit against the batters he faced. Also seeing an inning of relief were seniors Tommy Natale-Drown, and Hunter Guard, who earned a save, and sophomores Bryan Schoch, who earned the win, and Clay Weidemoyer.
Leading the Greyhounds at the plate was junior centerfielder Anthony Gaetaniello, who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Senior third baseman Alex Bull went 2-for-3 on the day with two runs, one RBI and a walk. Also grabbing RBIs for the Hounds were freshman outfielders Mike Mittl and Austin Markowski.
"It was good to get the win today," commented Head Coach Paul Engelhardt. "We saw some of the things we had been working on at the plate, which was good. But we still had a few to many errors in the field but hopefully a good day of practice tomorrow will get us ready to go for the weekend.
The Greyhounds would fall down by a run in the top of the fifth only to rally back in the bottom half of the very same inning to jump out to a 3-1 lead. The Blue and Grey's runs in that inning would come from a single by Gaetaniello, which scored freshman shortstop Evan Kulig and Bull. Markowski followed up with a single that was roped down the left field line Kulig.
In the seventh the Hounds would take another run off of a single by Mittl scoring Gaetaniello. After New Jersey City tied it in the top of the eighth, the Greyhounds would get a huge double from Bull to give them the winning run. To seal the game Bull was able to take home when the pitcher and catcher miscommunicated on the throw back to the mound sending the Greyhounds to their final score of 6-4.
The Greyhounds will take on the Catholic University of American this weekend, Saturday and Sunday March 19-20, to open the Landmark Conference Season. The first pitch on Saturday is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
