HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --- Senior designated hitter Cameron Leon connected on a pair of three-run homers to help lead the Moravian College baseball team to a 13-5 win over York College of Pennsylvania at the Hampden-Sydney College Classic Sunday while junior outfielder Anthony Gaetaniello was 5-for-9 on the day with five runs and four RBIs including three hits in the Greyhounds' 5-2 win over the host Tigers in the final game Sunday.
Leon was 3-for-3 against York; scoring all three times he came to the plate and driving in six runs, tied for the second most in a single game in school history, and hitting the first two home runs of his career. Gaetaniello was 2-for-4 in the contest with three runs, three RBIs and his first career home run as the duo accounted for five of Moravian's 10 hits and nine of the 10 RBIs by the Hounds.
Freshman Rhett Jacoby made his collegiate debut on the mound and earned the victory after allowing a run and striking out two batters in six innings of action. Sophomore Bryan Schoch tossed an inning with two strikeouts while seniors Tommy Natale-Drown and Hunter Guard each pitched one inning with Guard recording a strikeout.
After the Hounds, now 2-1 on the season, gave up a run to York in the top of the first inning, Leon connected on a two-out, three-run homer to left field to put Moravian ahead for good at 3-1.
The Blue and Grey tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the third inning when Gaetaniello scored on an error and Leon drilled his second three-run shot of the game. Gaetaniello scored again in the fourth inning when he raced home from third on a stolen base by freshman outfielder Mike Mittl.
Moravian pushed three runs across the plate in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by senior third baseman Alex Bull and a two-RBI single off of Gaetaniello's bat. The Hounds had freshman outfielder Austin Markowski cross the plate on an error in sixth inning before Gaetaniello finished the scoring with a solo homer with one out in the bottom half of the seventh inning.
Gaetaniello led Moravian at the dish versus Hampden-Sydney with a 3-for-5 performance as he scored twice and drove in a run. Senior first baseman Charles Savite drove in two runs with one hit while Markowski connected on his first career homer.
Junior Nicolas Ampietro earned the win on the mound for the Greyhounds, allowing one run in six innings of action while striking out three batters and walking none. Sophomore Nicholas Mazzella tossed two innings while sophomore Clay Weidemoyer earned his first collegiate save with one inning of work.
The Hounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Gaetaniello scored on an RBI single by Savite but the Tigers would tie the score at 1-1 with a run in the bottom half of the inning.
Moravian took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the top of the third for a 3-1 advantage. Gaetaniello led off the frame with a single and scored on an RBI ground out by Savite. Leon followed with an RBI single to plate Mittl, who had reached on a sacrifice bunt.
Markowski led off the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run, and Moravian would score its final run on the top of the sixth when freshman shortstop Joey Ferolie led off with a double and raced home on an RBI double from Gaetaniello.
The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, March 1 when the squad heads to No. 5 Kean University for a non-conference game with first pitch slated for 3:30 p.m.
