Greyhounds Win Big in Opening Round of Starters Winter Classic

The Moravian College women's basketball team defeated Medgar Evers College 96-19 in the opening round of the 11th Annual Starters Moravian Winter Classic. This is the ninth time the Greyhounds will play in the championship game of the Starters Moravian Winter Classic.

Moravian (6-4) started of the game with a quick layup from freshman forward Alexis Wright, and that basket would be the start of a 14-0 run to begin the game. At 16:56, sophomore guard Danielle Brogan would hit her first of three straight three-pointers to then put the Hounds up 17-2 with 15:56 remaining in the half. Another three from sophomore guard Alyssa Hann would give Moravian a 20-2 lead with 13:53 left in the first half.

A jumper from Cougars (2-8), senior forward Chantal Biscette, would make the score 28-5 with just over 11 minutes left in the half. The Greyhounds would keep the pressure on the rest of the half while extending their lead to 54-9 as both teams headed into halftime.

Moravian shot 54.8 percent from the field in the first half while Medgar Evers shot 14.3 percent, and both teams brought down 19 rebounds. Brogan led the way for the Greyhounds in the first half with 13 points and three boards while Biscette had seven points and ten boards for the Cougars.

Moravian would keep the same pace up in the second half, and one point going on a 24-0 run that gave the Greyhounds a 91-13 lead with 3:46 to go in the game. Moravian reached its largest lead at 79 points with 1:37 remaining in the game at 96-17. The Hounds would go onto win 96-19.

Wright and Brogan for Moravian both finished with 16 points and four rebounds in the contest. Senior forward Alexandra Blair had 12 points and five boards while Hann finished with 11 points, three assists and two steals. Sophomore forward Erika Blair tallied eight points and two steals while junior guard Amanda Kreuder had six points, nine assists and three steals. Sophomore guard Laura Casey had six points and two assists while sophomore forward Laura Jordan brought down five boards to go with her four points. Senior guard Hilary Murray, junior guard Kaite Marakos and sophomore guard Sarah LaFerrara each finished with four points while senior guard Cassandra Phillips had five boards.

Biscette finished with a double-double off of 15 rebounds and 13 points for the Cougars while senior forward Yvanna Jack had nine boards and six points.

Moravian shot 58.1 percent from the field for the game while Medgar Evers shot 11.1 percent. The Greyhounds brought down 37 rebounds while the Cougars had 35.

This 77 point victory by the Greyhounds marks the largest winning margin in Moravian women's basketball history.

Moravian will take on the winner of Albany College of Pharmacy versus Delaware Valley College in the championship game tomorrow, January 3rd at 5:30 p.m. Medgar Evers will play the remaining team in a consolation game tomorrow at 1 p.m.
