Mary Beth Spirk to Appear on RCN 4 Sports Talk Thursday Evening

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian College head women's basketball coach Mary Beth Spirk will appear on RCN 4 Sports Talk on Thursday, April 5 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Spirk will be part of an hour-long round table discussion with host Chris Michael as well as DeSales University Head Coach Fred Richter and Muhlenberg College Head Coach Ron Rohn.  The trio will talk about the rivalries and relationships between the three Lehigh Valley schools as well as the work involved in recruiting, building successful teams every year, thoughts on the 2011-12 season and a look ahead to what next year has in store for each program.

Spirk just returned from Denver and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Convention during the NCAA Division I Women's Final Four.  As a member of the WBCA Board of Directors for a second consecutive year, Spirk was involved in meetings and round table discussions.  Spirk also led the NCAA Division III business meeting.

Spirk along with assistant coaches Amy Endler and Sara Steinman as well as Moravian College Chief of Staff Julie Del Giorno received an award while in Denver from Kay Yow Cancer Fund Executive Director Sue Donohoe as the top NCAA Division III school in the 2012 Kay Yow Contest.  Moravian raised $12,025 during its Play 4Kay week this past February, more than doubling its total from the previous year, and Moravian has been the top Division III program the last three years and has raised a total of $29,150 in the four years of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

Spirk has the Greyhounds to the postseason 22 times in her 25 years as head coach.  Spirk, who has an overall record of 465-223, has led the Greyhounds program to: seven Middle Atlantic Southeast titles, three Middle Atlantic South Championships, two Middle Atlantic Conference crowns, seven NCAA bids, three "Sweet 16" appearances, an ECAC Championship in 2007, and most recently the 2010 Landmark Conference Championship. In 2009, she reached the 400 win mark with a victory over Susquehanna University and was recognized at the Final Four in St Louis at a luncheon in which Pat Summit was also honored.

The 1991-92 season saw the Lady Greyhounds enjoy the most successful season the college has ever experienced. Their 31-2 campaign culminated in hosting the Final Four, an article in Sports Illustrated and a National Runner-Up finish. Spirk's efforts that year netted her the Women's Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year award, as well as MAC and Mid-Atlantic Region Honors.  Spirk has been honored as the conference Coach of the Year eight times and the Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year five times.
