Moravian to Host Play 4Kay Breast Cancer Awareness Game on February 4, 2012

BETHLEHEM, PA --- The Moravian College women's basketball team will host its annual Cancer Awareness Day on Saturday February 4, 2012 when the Greyhounds host Juniata College in a Landmark Conference game.  The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall on the campus of Moravian College.

The Play 4Kay initiative is a global unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities, and beyond.  Last year, Moravian raised $5,825, the highest total among NCAA Division III schools, with all proceeds from pledges, raffles, and t-shirt sales donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.  The Greyhounds also led Division III in 2010 with $6,100, and Moravian was the runner up in 2009 with $5,200.  The basketball program is asking that faculty, staff, and students join us in this fight.  In the past, the Moravian College community has been very generous in support of this event.

T-shirts, rally towels and mini basketballs will be sold at the game, and raffles will be drawn for prizes as well as giveaways of stress balls and silly bands.  There will be halftime contests with grand prizes of $100 cash and a Nintendo DS, the team will hold its annual Pie in the Face Penny Wars final.  Jugs are being placed in the HUB all week for Associate Professor of Music/Band Director Jim Barnes, Head Softball Coach John Byrne, Chief of Staff Julie Del Giorno, Head Athletics Trainer Bob Ward, senior women's soccer captain Diana Feldmann, sophomore campus social director Devon James and senior football captain Seth Payne, and the three with the most money at the end of the week, will get a pie in the face at halftime of the basketball game.  All proceeds will be donated to cancer research.

For the fifth straight season, the women's team will be wearing pink uniforms, one of the few NCAA Division III schools to wear pink uniforms for the initiative.  Watch a preview video from the women's basketball team at - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECmJZyGsSRA.

The team will also be accepting pledges of $1 for each assist the Moravian teams make in each game.  Currently, women's team is averaging 15.3 assists per game.  To make a donation or for more information, please contact Assistant Coach Amy Endler at 610-861-1472 or email at aendler@moravian.edu.

In addition to the festivities on Saturday, Moravian has several other activities this week with the proceeds going to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.  On Sunday, January 29, Head Women's Basketball Coach Mary Beth Spirk and Assistant Coach Sara Steinman held a clinic at Jonathan Dayton High School, Steinman's alma mater, and on Monday, January 30, the Greyhounds will be hosting a clinic in Johnston Hall from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for children in 2nd through 12th grade for a $5 donation.  Click here for a flyer - http://www.moravian.edu/athletics/wbasketball/11-12/Play4Kay%20clinic%20flyer.pdf.

On Tuesday, January 31, members of Moravian's coaching staff will serve as guest bartenders at Starters Riverport from 7-9 p.m. with all tips made at the main bar during those two hours donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.  The three Starters restaurants will be donating ten percent of a patron's total until February 29 with the following flyer - http://www.moravian.edu/athletics/wbasketball/11-12/DineDonate2012.pdf.
