22 Moravian Student-Athletes Named to Landmark Conference Winter Academic Honor Roll

Landmark Conference Winter Academic Honor Roll

MADISON, N.J. --- The Landmark Conference has recognized 204 student-athletes including 22 from Moravian College by selecting them for the 2012 Winter Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll. The honorees were selected from all eight Landmark Conference institutions.

The Landmark Academic Honor Roll recognizes all winter student athletes of sophomore standing or older with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. The student-athletes must complete the winter season in good standing with their team. All eight Landmark Conference institutions placed at least nine athletes on the Academic Honor Roll and all six winter Landmark sports were represented on the team.

The Landmark Winter All-Academic Team, which features two male and two female student-athletes from each Landmark institution will be released later this season. In addition, a Senior Scholar Athlete will be chosen for each Landmark sport.

Along with the Landmark Academic Honor Roll, one winter sport athlete earned a spot on Capital One Academic All-District Team in women?s basketball.

The Landmark Conference is in its fifth season of competition and includes eight institutions covering the mid-Atlantic region. The Landmark crowned six team championships this fall, and sent six programs to either the NCAA or ECAC postseason as well as three individuals to both the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field and Swimming & Diving Championships.

Moravian had student-athletes from three of its winter teams that compete in the conference with the men's indoor track team leading the way with eight honorees. The women's basketball program and the women's indoor track team each had seven student-athletes each named to the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll.

The men's indoor track team won the 2012 Landmark Conference Championship had six seniors named to the Landmark Conference Honor Roll ? Jordan Barton (Williamsport, Pa./Montoursville HS), Kyle D'Angelo (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern HS), Nicco Dalpiaz (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy HS), Timothy Layng (Canton, Pa./Canton HS), Matthew Lutcza (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley HS) and Gary Zack (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood HS). Junior Travis King (Wilmington, Del./Concord HS) and sophomore Craig Arner (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom HS) were also named to the Honor Roll. Layng along with Dalpiaz made the Landmark Conference First Team while D'Angelo and King made the Second All-Conference Team.  Layng also earned All-America honors in the pole vault.

The women's basketball team finished their season with a record of 17-12, while qualifying for the Landmark Conference tournament as well as the ECAC South Championship. There was one senior on the team qualifying for the Landmark Winter Academic Honor Roll, guard Cassandra Phillips (Orwigsburg, Pa./Nativity BVM HS). Other members of the team that qualified were juniors guards Alyssa Baranovich (Nesquehoning, Pa./Panther Valley HS) and Katie Markos (Absecon, N.J./Holy Spirit HS). The last four on the women?s team to make are all sophomores - guard Danielle Brogan (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills HS), guard Alyssa Hann (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth HS), forward Laura Jordan (Easton, Pa./Easton HS) and guard Katie O'Rourke (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra HS).

The women's indoor track and field team competed and won the 2012 Landmark Conference Championship, its fifth straight indoor conference title. On the team there are four seniors on the team that made the Landmark Winter Academic Honor Roll - Cadee Rockwell (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson West Lawn HS), Kristina Ruggiero (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove HS), Abby Schaffer (Easton, Pa./Easton HS) and Lisa Williamson (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson West Lawn HS). Junior Emma Pacheco (Flourtown, Pa./Mount St. Joseph Academy) as well as sophomores Jennifer Parodi (Holland, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie HS) and Allison Vanek (Riegelsville, Pa./Wilson HS). Schaffer, Ruggiero, and Williamson all made First Team All-Conference with Williamson earning Landmark Conference Track Athlete of the Year honors.  Schaffer also earned All-America accolades in the pole vault.
