Layng Breaks School Record in Pole Vault to Lead Men's Indoor Track & Field at Thomson Invitational

The Moravian College men's indoor track & field teams competed at the Thomson Invitational hosted by the University of Delaware on Saturday with the Greyhounds finishing fourth of 17 in the NCAA Division II and Division III events. The meet is divided into Division I competition and then NCAA Division II and Division III competition. The Moravian men had a team score of 88 points, which had them seventh of the 22 overall teams competing and fourth in their division. Widener University led the NCAA Division II and Division III squads with 123 points while Rowan University was second with 96 points and The College of New Jersey was third with 94 points. 

Moravian had two individual champions and a pair of ECAC qualifiers in the men's competition. Senior Timothy Layng captured the pole vault with school record and an ECAC qualifying height of 4.90 meters (16 feet, ¾ inch). That height also tied for fifth on the Track & Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) list to compete at the 2012 NCAA Division III National Championships. Layng entered the meet tied for 14th on the TFRRS list. Senior Steve Ambrosi was third in the 1,000-meter run with an ECAC qualifying time of 2:33.18, the third fastest time in school history.

Sophomore Kristopher Joint won the long jump with a leap of 6.52 meters (21 feet, 4 ¾ inches),which was the same distance as the winner but Joint had a shorter second jump, and he was second in the triple jump at 13.42 meters (44 feet, ½ inch). Senior Nicco Dalpiaz was the runner-up in both the pole vault at 4.50 meters (14 feet, nine inches) and the 60-meter hurdles in 8.68 seconds.

In other field results for the men, junior Jonathan Heberling was second in the long jump at 6.46 meters (21 feet, 2 ½ inches), and he was fourth in the high jump at 1.84 meters (six feet, ½ inch). Junior Travis King was third in the triple jump at 13.26 meters (43 feet, six inches) while freshman Chris Ossont was sixth at 11.90 meters (39 feet, ½ inch). 

On the track, junior Donald Noble was third in the mile run in 4:24.85, which is the eighth fastest time in school history, while freshman Dillon Farrell took fourth at 4:25.97 and senior Matthew Lutcza finished seventh in a time of 4:30.40. Junior Vincent McDowell was eighth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.27 seconds.

Moravian's 4x400-meter "A" relay team of Ambrosi, Farrell, Lutcza and Noble finished seventh in a time of 3:37.29 while the "B" squad of McDowell, senior Kyle D'Angelo and freshmen Travis Dorsa and Alec Duncan placed tenth in 3:44.29.

The Greyhounds will return to action on Saturday, February 4th when Moravian travels to the 13th Annual DeSchriver Invitational at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.
