Greyhounds Fall to Susquehanna in Landmark Action

Bethlehem, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team began 2015 with Landmark Conference action against Susquehanna University on Saturday in Johnston Hall. The Greyhounds six-game series win streak would come to an end in an 82-64 loss against the Crusaders marking their first loss at home to Susquehanna since 2008.

"I thought we played good in spots," commented Head Coach Mary Beth Spirk. "We came back and took the lead but it's frustrating because we didn't maintain a level of consistency and I said that to the players. We can't feel sorry for ourselves either as we play Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and have to get back and get to work."

Senior forward Alexis Wright led the Greyhounds with 21 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots. Freshman forward Trista Cunningham tied her career-high by scoring 14 points and grabbed four rebounds. Junior forward Alesha Marcks put up nine points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals while newcomer junior guard Samantha Caligiuri score eight points, one rebound and three assists in her debut as a Hound. Junior guard Emily MacDonnell added seven points, two rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot while junior guard Marie Rossignoli scored two points and sophomore guard Morgan Calabrese tossed in three points, one assist and two steals.

The Greyhounds would strike first with a three-pointer from Calabrese and would trade baskets until the Crusaders extended the lead. With a layup Cunningham cutting the deficit to two and finishing the three-point play on a free throw line, the Blue and Grey trailed by one, 24-23, with 8:25 left in the first half. Caligiuri gave the Hounds the lead 27-26 with just under seven minutes to play. The score headed into intermission was 44-33 in favor of Susquehanna.

In the second half, Wright would score eight points to cut the deficit to five. Marcks would convert a three-point play after drawing a foul on a made layup bringing the Hounds within one point until Wright would follow her up with a layup for a 49-48 lead with 15:10 remaining. The Crusaders rallied back and took the lead back once again that the Hounds couldn't quite bounce back a third time in the game.

The Greyhounds head to The United States Merchant Marine Academy on Tuesday, January 6 for another Landmark Conference game with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
