Marcks' First Double-Double Leads Hounds Past USMMA

KINGS POINT, N.Y. --- Junior forward Alesha Marcks earned the first double-double of her career with 13 points and 14 rebounds, and the Moravian College women's basketball team scored 42 second half points to post a 64-52 Landmark Conference victory at The United States Merchant Marine Academy Tuesday evening.

Marcks' 14 rebounds were a career-high and marked the second time this season she has reached double-digits on the boards, and Marcks also blocked a career-best four blocked shots as the Greyhounds swatted away 13 shots in the contest. Senior forward Alexis Wright scored a game-high 19 points to become the 17th player in school history to reach 1,100 points as she pushed her career total to 1,107 points, and Wright also added seven rebounds to move into seventh in the Moravian record books with 747 boards.

Wright contributed five blocked shots while junior forward Karlee Corvasce added a career-best four blocked shots to go along with four rebounds and two points. Sophomore guard Morgan Calabrese tossed in nine points to go with four rebounds while freshman guard Taylor Freeman added seven points, three rebounds and two assists for the Hounds.

Junior guard Emily MacDonnell dished out a game-high six assists to go along with five points and three rebounds while junior guard Marie Rossignoli added four points. Junior guard Samantha Caligiuri had three points, three boards and three steals in her first start for the Hounds.

The Greyhounds netted the opening points of the game when Calabrese hit on a three-pointer 2:16 into action but the Mariners answered with a 6-0 run and 11 of the next 13 points to build an 11-5 advantage at the 13:40 mark. Moravian scored six straight points to knot the score at 11-11 with 9:33 before the intermission on a lay-up from Marcks.

With the score tied at 13-13, USMMA went four and a half minutes without scoring while the Hounds didn't put points on the scoreboard for nearly six minutes before Wright tied the game at 15-15 with 2:59 before the intermission. The Greyhounds ended up heading to the locker room with a 22-21 after MacDonnell connected on a three-pointer with just three ticks before halftime.

Wright needed just 20 seconds after the break to make the lead 24-21 but the Mariners rallied back for a 27-26 advantage. Moravian answered back with a 7-0 run as a three-point play by Marcks put the Hounds up 33-27 with 15 and a half minutes of action left.

After USMMA cut the Greyhounds' advantage to 35-31 at the 14:44 mark, Moravian went on a 12-0 run over the next four minutes to build a double-digit lead of 16 points, 47-31. The Hounds, who would go in front by 17 points twice, kept the lead in double figures the rest of the way as they evened their overall record at 6-6 and their Landmark Conference mark at 2-2.

The Greyhounds will get right back on the court when they host Drew University in a Landmark contest on Thursday, January 8 tipping off at 7:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall.
