BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's lacrosse team posted a 16-8 victory over visiting Alvernia University in non-conference action on John Makuvek Field Tuesday afternoon.
The Greyhounds, now 3-1 on the year, had five different players score goals led by sophomore midfielder Meaghan McMullan, who netted five goals to go with two assists, seven draw controls, three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Junior attack Liz Bill and freshman midfielder Lindsey Strohl each scored four goals with Strohl adding four draw controls and three ground balls. Sophomore attack Breanna Federico added two goals and an assist while freshman attack Eliza Fantazzi had one goal.
Sophomore attack Danielle Sullivan dished out four assists while freshman attack Kelsey Moore had an assist and a pair of ground balls. Sophomore defender Olivia Clearie contributed six draw controls and two caused turnovers for the Blue and Grey while freshman defender Jamie Bader had three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Sophomore goalie Courtney Heist made seven saves to improve to 2-0 in goal this season for Moravian while junior midfielder Allie Fisher had three ground balls and two draw controls and sophomore defender Maecy Chlebowski scooped up two ground balls.
The Greyhounds had a 42-19 advantage in shots, a 20-17 edge in ground balls, a 19-6 advantage in draw controls and were 10-for-11 in clears out of the defensive end.
Strohl opened the scoring just 26 seconds into the contest and McMullan added her first goal as the Blue and Grey took a 2-0 lead in the first minute of action. Federico, Bill and Strohl had goals to make it 5-0 before the Golden Wolves scored their first goal. Alvernia netted two of the next three goals to cut the Hounds' lead to 6-2. Moravian then ran off six straight goals including four by McMullan to push the edge to 12-2, and the Greyhounds had a 12-3 lead at the intermission.
Fantazzi netted her first collegiate goal to start the second half as the Hounds pushed the advantage back into double digits. The Golden Wolves scored before Bill pushed it back to a 14-4 lead with 16:21 left in the contest. Alvernia netted four goals in the final 7:52 of the match while Bill had the Greyhounds' final tally with 1:29 on the clock.
Moravian is slated to return to action on Saturday, March 16 in a non-conference match at Widener University beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Chester, Pennsylvania.
