GALLOWAY, N.J. --- The Moravian College women's lacrosse squad came back from a six-goal halftime deficit to force overtime before falling to host Stockton (N.J.) University, 21-20 with one second left in overtime, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.
The Greyhounds, now 6-4 this spring, five different goal scorers with junior attack Liz Bill and sophomore midfielder Meaghan McMullan each scoring seven goals. Senior attack Jillian Picciuto contributed four goals and two assists while senior attack Kyleigh Miller and sophomore attack Danielle Sullivan each scored one time.
Senior goalie Kelley Gavin made the start and had seven saves and a ground ball in 26 minutes of action while sophomore goalie Courtney Heist made seven saves in 37 minutes of action. Bill also contributed 10 draw controls while Picciuto had six draw controls and a team-high three ground balls. McMullan and freshman midfielder Lindsey Strohl each had four draw controls for the Hounds while senior attack Dalia Aguilar and sophomore defender Olivia Clearie each scooped up two ground balls.
Moravian a school record 25 draw controls for the third time this season, and the squad had a 46-42 edge in shots to go with 11 ground balls.
The Ospreys scored the first four goals of the match before Bill found the goal for the first time in the contest. Stockton scored again before tallies from Picciuto, Miller and Bill had the Blue and Grey down just 5-4 a little under 10 minutes into action. The Ospreys tallied the next five goals to pull ahead 10-4, and Bill and Picciuto both scored before the intermission as Moravian trailed 12-6 at the break.
Stockton netted the opening goal of the second half before the Greyhounds scored seven of eight goals including three each by McMullan and Bill to pull within a goal at 14-13 with 18:08 to play. Picciuto would knot the score at 15-15 on an eight-meter shot with 18:08 to play. The Ospreys held an 18-16 lead before three straight goals by McMullan had the Hounds leading for the first time at 19-18 with 7:30 to go. Stockton pulled ahead with 30 seconds remaining while Bill knotted the score again at 20-20 with nine seconds to go and force overtime.
The Greyhounds had the opening shot of overtime after Bill won the draw control, but McMullan's shot hit the post and settled on the outside of the netting. Stockton netted the game-winner with just one second left in the first three-minute overtime period.
Moravian is slated to return to action on Saturday, April 6 when the squad hosts Susquehanna University in a Landmark Conference match beginning at 1:00 p.m. on John Makuvek Field in Bethlehem.
