CHESTER, Pa. --- Sophomore midfielder Meaghan McMullan scored a school record 13 points to lead the Moravian College women's lacrosse team to a 21-16 non-conference victory at Widener University Saturday afternoon.
The Greyhounds, now 4-1 this season, had a total of six players score goals with McMullan netting eight goals and adding five assists to go with five ground balls. Junior attack Liz Bill contributed six goals and three assists to go with six ground balls while freshman midfielder Lindsey Strohl netted four goals to go with 12 draw controls and three ground balls. Junior midfielder Allie Fisher and sophomore attack Danielle Sullivan each had a goals and an assist with Fisher scooping up five ground balls and Sullivan adding two ground balls while freshman attack Kelsey Moore had a goal and three ground balls.
Senior goalie Kelley Gavin made 16 saves while sophomore defender Olivia Clearie contributed 11 draw controls, four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Freshman defender Meghan Moore scooped up three ground balls while freshman defender Samantha Cherenson had a pair of ground balls.
The Hounds had a 35-24 advantage in ground balls, a 24-14 edge on draw controls and were 16-for-20 on clears out of the defensive end.
Widener scored the first three goals of the contest before Strohl found the back of the net four and a half minutes into action. McMullan followed with two goals before Strohl scored again and Bill scored her first to give Moravian a 5-3 lead. The Pride closed within a goal at 6-5 before the Greyhounds ran off five straight goals including two each from McMullan and Bill and one by Fisher for an 11-5 lead with 2:46 to go in the first half. McMullan scored once more in the half as the Greyhounds headed to the intermission with a 12-7 advantage.
Moravian netted six of the first eight goals in the second half with Kelsey Moore pushing the edge to 18-9 with just over 20 minutes remaining in the contest. Widener would eventually close within four goals at 20-16 with just under four minutes to go before McMullan scored the final goal of the contest.
The Blue and Grey will return to action on Wednesday, March 20 when the squad hosts Swarthmore College in a non-conference match beginning at 7:00 p.m. on John Makuvek Field.
