Moravian Falls in Hard-Fought Match to Lebanon Valley to Open 2022 Season

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's lacrosse team rallied from an early 4-1 deficit to lead 5-4 after the first quarter; however, it was visiting Lebanon Valley College that earned an 11-9 win over the Greyhounds on John Makuvek Field Wednesday as the Hounds opened their 2022 season. 

How It Happened

  • The Flying Dutchmen netted two goals in the first 1:06 of action in the opening quarter, scoring 11 seconds apart. Moravian would get on the scoreboard when senior midfielder Kevin Berlin hit the cage at the 13:09 mark with his first tally of the season. LVC added two more goals to build a 4-1 edge with 6:45 to go in the first period. The Blue and Grey answered with four goals in a two-and-a-half-minute span with three from senior attack Connor James and another goal by Berlin as the Greyhounds led 5-4 after 15 minutes of action
  • Lebanon Valley netted three of the four goals in the second quarter including one in the final minute to head to the intermission with a 7-6 edge. Sophomore attack Trevor Dzama scored Moravian's goal in the period
  • Just over four minutes into the second half, the Hounds knotted the score at 7-7 as senior midfielder Zach Bergeron scored for the first time in 2022. The Flying Dutchmen answered with three straight goals to lead 10-7 after 45 minutes of play
  • The Greyhounds cut the deficit to two goals just 1:13 into the fourth quarter on a man-up goal from senior attack Griffin LeBlond. After the Flying Dutchmen added their second man-up goal of the match, Dzama scored the final marker of the contest with 8:16 left

Inside the Numbers

  • James led the Hounds with three goals while Dzama and Berlin each had two goals and an assist. LeBlond added a goal and two assists while Bergeron had one goal and senior midfielder Nick Nolder contributed two assists
  • Sophomore defender Jacob Stetson paced Moravian with seven ground balls while Bergeron and sophomore long stick midfielder Matt Baer both had six ground balls. Graduate student defender Jimmy Schicke contributed four ground balls and two caused turnovers
  • Junior goalie Sean DeMott made 12 saves while graduate student midfielder/face-off specialist Tyler James was 10-for-20 on face-offs to go with three ground balls
  • Moravian's man-down defensive unit held Lebanon Valley to just two goals in nine tries during the match
