Moravian Scores 13 First Half Goals to Race Past Juniata in Landmark Conference Action

HUNTINGDON, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's lacrosse team squad scored 13 first-half goals and picked up its first Landmark Conference win of the 2022 season with a 22-9 victory at Juniata College Saturday afternoon. 

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead just 1:28 into the contest when senior attack Connor James netted his first goal of the match. Juniata tied the contest at the 9:55 mark while junior midfielder Jack Bakey gave the Blue and Grey the lead for good just 22 seconds later. Senior attack Griffin LeBlond connected on a man-up goal while James had another marker, and freshman midfielder Steven Salica had a goal as Moravian led 5-1 after 15 minutes of action
  • LeBlond scored again with a man-up about three minutes into the second quarter before the Eagles scored again. The Hounds netted five straight goals including a man-up tally from sophomore attack Trevor Dzama for an 11-2 edge. After Juniata scored, Moravian added two more goals including a man-down goal from LeBlond to head to the intermission with a 13-3 advantage
  • The Greyhounds tallied six more goals in the third quarter with James netting one in a man-down situation and LeBlond scoring his third man-up goal of the match as the Blue and Grey led 19-7 after 45 minutes of play
  • Moravian would get goals from sophomore attack Brennan Fluehr, senior midfielder Nick Nolder and sophomore midfielder Jack Swistak in the final period to finish off the scoring

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 10 different players score a goal with LeBlond leading the way with six goals, which is tied for third most in a match in school history, to go with an assist and a pair of ground balls. James tallied six goals and an assist while Fluehr and Salica both had two goals
  • Dzama contributed a goal and eight assists, his second eight-assist match of the season, to go along with four ground balls, and Dzama's eight assists are tied for the third most in a match in program history
  • Senior midfielder Kevin Berlin had a goal and an assist while Bakey, Nolder, Swistak and senior midfielder Zach Bergeron all scored one goal with Bergeron and Fluehr both adding three ground balls
  • Sophomore lone stick midfielder Matt Baer contributed an assist, four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers while sophomore midfielder Joey Furino and freshman midfielder Aaron Judge both had one assist
  • Freshman goalie Thomas Lee recorded eight saves and three ground balls in 49 minutes of action as he improved to 4-2 on the season. Sophomore goalie Avery Napolitano made two saves in 11 minutes of action
  • Freshman defender Jason Levy scooped up five ground balls and had a pair of caused turnovers while graduate student defender Jimmy Schicke added four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore defenders Jacob Stetson and Nick Sullivan each had two ground balls and two caused turnovers
  • Senior midfielder Ben Walek was 19-for-28 on face-offs, tied for the fifth most in a match in program history, with a team-high 10 ground balls while freshman midfielder Gannon Mesko went 3-for-6 on face-offs and graduate student midfielder Tyler James scooped up three ground balls 
  • The Greyhounds had a 67-37 advantage in shots, just one shy of the school record for shots in a match, and a 50-30 edge in ground balls to go with a 22-for-35 day on face-offs. Moravian was also 26-for-27 on clears
