Hounds Earn Third Straight Win with 11-Goal Victory over Gwynedd Mercy

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's lacrosse team won its third straight match with an 18-7 victory over visiting Gwynedd Mercy University in non-conference action on John Makuvek Field Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 3-0 advantage after the first five minutes of the first quarter with senior attack Connor James earning the first goal of the contest followed by a man-up goal from senior attack Griffin LeBlond and another marker from James
  • The Griffins scored their first goal of the game with a man-up before the Greyhounds found the back of the net again with senior midfielder Zach Bergeron beating the netminder to increase the edge back to three goal edge, 4-1. Both squads would exchange goals for the remainder of the quarter and Gwynedd Mercy scored in the final second of the period to cut the Moravian lead to two goals, 6-4, after 15 minutes of action
  • The Greyhounds scored six of the seven goals in the second quarter with James netting three of his own in the period that gave the Blue and Grey a 12-5 edge at the half
  • Sophomore midfielder Joey Furino and sophomore attack Trevor Dzama both scored in the third period to give the Hounds a 14-5 advantage after 45 minutes of play
  • Gwynedd Mercy started the fourth quarter off with a goal before a pair of tallies by James. Dzama added another goal while freshman midfielder Nick Sullivan scored the final goal of the match and the first of his career, to give the Greyhounds an 18-7 victory 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had eight different goal scorers with James netting seven goals to go with an assist and four ground balls. The goal total for James was the second highest of his career and is tied for the third most in a match in program history
  • Dzama netted a hat trick to go with a career-high eight assists, and he also scooped up three ground balls. Dzama's eight assists are tied for the third most in a match in school history while his 11 total points also are tied for third in the program record books
  • Bergeron and Furino both netted two goals with Bergeron adding four ground balls while LeBlond had a goal and an assist. Sullivan and senior midfielders Nick Nolder and Kevin Berlin all scored one goal with Nolder adding three ground balls while freshman midfielder Aden Moskovitz contributed an assist and a pair of ground balls
  • Freshman goalie Thomas Lee earned his second straight victory with nine saves in 54 minutes of action while sophomore Avery Napolitano did not face a shot in the final 6:13 of the contest
  • Senior Ben Walek went 16-for-26 on face-offs with eight ground balls while graduate student defender Jimmy Schicke had five ground balls. Sophomores long stick midfielder Matt Baer and Jacob Stetson each had three ground balls with Stetson adding a pair of caused turnovers
  • The Blue and Grey finished with a 60-38 advantage in shots, a 45-23 edge in ground balls, won 17-of-27 face-offs and were 20-for-21 on clearing attempts
