Moravian Wins in Overtime over Catholic on Senior Day

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's lacrosse team scored 40 seconds into overtime to earn an 11-10 Landmark Conference victory over visiting The Catholic University of America on Senior Day at John Makuvek Field Saturday. 

How It Happened

  • The Cardinals scored the opening goal of the match while the Greyhounds knotted the scored at 1-1 at the 8:42 mark as sophomore attack Ryan Kokoszka hit the net. The Blue & Grey took a 2-1 lead just over a minute later when junior midfielder Aaron Judge scored an unassisted goal. Catholic countered as the squads were tied at 2-2 after 15 minutes of action
  • Judge connected on a man-up goal two and a half minutes into the second quarter as Moravian retook a one-goal lead. senior attack Trevor Dzama assisted on the goal as he broke the Landmark Conference record with his 120th career assist. The squads traded goals with Judge scoring once more in the period before the teams headed to the intermission knotted at 4-4
  • The Hounds began the second half with three straight goals as Judge, senior attack Brennan Fluehr and Dzama all found the net for a 7-4 lead. Catholic answered with a pair of goals around a tally from junior midfielder Steven Salica as the Blue & Grey led 8-6 after 45 minutes of play
  • Salica scored again to start the fourth quarter while the Cardinals answered to remain within two goals at 9-7. Junior midfielder Dan Kelly tallied at the 11:45 mark for a three-goal Moravian edge. However, Catholic scored the final three goals of regulation including the tying goal with 1:16 on the clock to force overtime with the contest tied at 10-10
  • The Greyhounds won the opening face-off of the extra session, and Salica found the net with a shot from the top of the box off a pass from freshman attack Nick Coffaro 40 seconds into overtime
  • Prior to the match, the Greyhounds honored seniors Matt Baer, Dzama, Connor Estes, Fluehr, Joey Furino, Avery Napolitano, Jake Smit, Jack Swistak and Tommy Ulmer

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had seven players record a point with Judge scoring four goals
  • Salica had a hat trick while Dzama and Kelly each had a goal and an assist in the victory. While Dzama set the Landmark Conference record for career assists, he is still five assists shy of the Moravian school record, set before the Greyhounds joined the Landmark Conference
  • Kokoszka and Fluehr both added one goal while Coffaro had three assists
  • Freshman Liam Kelly made ten saves while junior Gannon Mesko was 8-for-20 on face-offs with four ground balls
  • Baer scooped up four ground balls while junior defender Austin Hittle and junior midfielder Aden Moskovitz both had three ground balls with Hittle going 2-for-5 on face-offs
  • Sophomore defender Mike Sickler had three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers while junior defender Jason Levy registered two ground balls and two caused turnovers
  • The overtime win is the first for the Hounds since a 9-8 victory at Kean on April 1, 2019
  • The Blue & Grey had a 37-34 edge in shots and went 2-for-2 with a man advantage
