NEWARK, N.J. --- The Moravian University men's soccer squad defeated the host of the Brick City Classic, Rutgers-Newark, 3-2, in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds first shot of the game resulted in a breakaway goal from sophomore Reed Sturza with an assist from senior Anthony Nagy in the 8th minute of the game.
  • Rutgers-Newark would find the equalizer in the 31st minute, which would tie the game and hold through the rest of half, tied 1-1 at intermission.
  • Sturza would find the back of the net in the 70th minute, for his second of the game, when a deflected ball found his foot and he sent it over the keeper's head to regain the lead.
  • Just four minutes later, in the 74th minute, senior Andrew Goodolf got a pass in front of the goal and tapped in a pass from Sturza to extend the Greyhounds lead to 3-1.
  • Late in the second half, Rutgers-Newark cut the lead back to one goal, but Moravian would hold on for a 3-2 victory.

Quotable

  • "It was a great weekend in Newark at the Brick City Classic," commented Head Coach Bob Wilkinson. "What an exciting game that went down to the wire. Rutgers-Newark put us under a lot of pressure until the end, but the boys hung on. We were tired at times after our overtime game on Friday. But we put together a real good stretch in the second half to give us a 3 to 1 lead. Credit to the players for the way they battled. And thank you to Rutgers-Newark for putting together a great tournament."
