TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian University graduate student Cole Stanchina has been selected as the Landmark Conference Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week for his performance last week.
Stanchina placed third of the 189 runners in the Stockton University Osprey Open with a personal best time of 25:11.50 on the 8,000-meter course that will host the 2024 NCAA Division III Metro Regional in November. Stanchina was one of five Greyhounds to finish in the top 15 as the Hounds won the meet with a score of 34 points, finishing 42 points ahead of runner-up and NCAA Division I Seton Hall University.
"Cole put in an incredible summer of work and his endurance-based workouts have been extremely impressive, so once we moved up from the 6k a few weeks ago, we somewhat expected the added distance to suit his strengths more," stated Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Jesse Baumann. "Cole was bold around the 5k mark and took control of the race to try and take the finishing kicks out of a few runners and although it may have ultimately put a target on his back for the last 3k, it also pushed the pace which ultimately resulted in a 20 second lifetime best for him. It was a very encouraging 8k to build on as we approach a tough training block coming up and look to even better races out of Cole moving forward."
The Greyhounds have two weeks off from competition before returning to race in the Annual Paul Short Run at Lehigh University's Goodman Campus on Saturday, October 5.
