Greyhounds Drop Game to Heidelberg (Ohio) University at Snowbird Classic

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. --- The Moravian College baseball squad dropped a 13-6 decision to Heidelberg (Ohio) University in the Snowbird Classic Wednesday at the North Charlotte Regional Park.

The Greyhounds had five hits in the contest with sophomore designated hitter Thomas Philipps going 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Junior right fielder Carmine Palummo also had two RBIs in the game.

The Hounds used six pitchers in the game with freshman Scott Poulson making his first career start and recording two strikeouts in an inning of action. Sophomore Kyle Serman tossed 1.1 innings with one strikeout while senior Billy Roethke pitched one inning. Sophomore Kevin Brandt was on the mound for 1.2 innings and was followed by senior Kevin Shields, who tossed two innings with two strikeouts. Freshman Kyle Petsch also pitched one inning for the Blue and Grey.

Heidelberg jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

Moravian responded with three runs in the top of the second frame to take a 3-2 lead. Senior first baseman Evan Kulig drew a walk to start the inning while senior third baseman Tim Heard reached on an error and senior second baseman Ian Csencsits was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Philipps followed with a two-RBI single as Kulig and Heard raced home. After a sacrifice bunt by junior catcher Ian Luberti, sophomore shortstop Michael Miceli connected on an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Philipps.

The Student Princes retook the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, and Heidelberg added four runs in the fourth to push its edge to 8-3.

The Blue and Grey scored a run in the top of the seventh when senior catcher Andrew Koenig drew a one out walk and scored on an RBI single from senior center fielder Austin Markowski.

Heidelberg scored four times in the bottom half of the seventh inning and once more in the eighth for a 13-4 advantage.

Moravian would plate two runs in the top of the ninth before the game ended. Keonig drew a walk while freshman pinch hitter Leo Andreoli record on a fielder choice and freshman left fielder Robert Roman walked to load the bases. Palummo followed with a two-RBI single up the middle as Keonig and Andreoli crossed the plate.

The Greyhounds have a day on Thursday before completing their trip to the Snowbird Classic on Friday, March 8 with games versus No. 21 Misericordia University at 10:00 a.m. and Baldwin-Wallace (Ohio) University at 1:30 p.m. at South County Regional Park.
