WASHINGTON, D.C. --- The Moravian College baseball team dropped a Landmark Conference doubleheader at The Catholic University of America Saturday, falling by scores of 4-1 and 6-5.
The Greyhounds, now 14-14 overall and 7-4 in Landmark Conference action, had six hits in the opening contest with junior second baseman Ian Csencsits going 2-for-3.
Freshman Eddie Olsen made the start on the mound with four runs on nine hits and a walk to go with six strikeouts in 4.1 innings of action. Senior Tyler Caraway tossed 1.2 innings in relief.
The Hounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when sophomore shortstop Michael Miceli drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on a two-out bases loaded infield single by sophomore first baseman Brett Moyer.
The Cardinals answered with a run in the bottom of the third to knot the score, and Catholic added two runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth to capture the opening contest.
Moravian had eight hits in the second game with sophomore left fielder Thomas Philipps going 2-for-3 and Miceli going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior third baseman Tim Heard connected on his first collegiate home run in the contest.
Senior Evan Kulig made the start on the mound for the Hounds and tossed 3.1 innings with six runs on 11 hits to go with one strikeout. Senior Rhett Jacoby pitched the final 4.2 innings and allowed three hits and three walks while striking out two batters.
Heard led off the game with a solo home run to center field. Kulig and senior center fielder Austin Markowski drew walks before Philipps was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Junior right fielder Carmine Palummo drew an RBI walk to bring in Kulig but the Blue and Grey would lead the bases loaded.
Catholic answered with three runs in the bottom of the first, and the Cardinals scored three more times in the bottom of the second for a 6-2 edge.
Moravian scored twice in the top of the third to cut it to a 6-4 deficit. Markowski was hit by a pitch before freshman first baseman AJ Brosious walked. Philipps singled to load the bases before a one-out RBI walk from senior catcher Andrew Koenig scored Markowski. Miceli would drive in Brosious with an RBI ground out.
The Hounds made it a one-run game in the top of the fourth when Csencsits led off with a single and scored on an RBI double down the left field line by Markowski, who ended being out trying to steal home to end the inning. The Blue and Grey left a total of 14 runners on base in the game including the bases loaded twice.
The Greyhounds are slated to close out the Landmark Conference series at Catholic on Sunday, April 14 with a single game beginning at 12:00 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
