Csencsits Reaches 100 Career Hits as Moravian Rallies for Win at Albright

READING, Pa. --- Junior second baseman Ian Csencsits connected on an RBI single in the sixth inning to become the 35th Moravian College baseball player to reach 100 career hits and help the Greyhounds rally for an 11-10 win at Albright College in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon.

The Hounds, now 13-9 overall after their third straight one-run win, had a total of 14 hits in the game with senior center fielder Austin Markowski going 2-for-4 with three runs, two RBIs, a double and a home run. Junior right fielder Carmine Palummo was also 2-for-4 for Moravian while senior designated hitter Evan Kulig went 2-for-6 with two RBIs and a double. Csencsits added two RBIs for the Greyhounds while sophomore left fielder Thomas Philipps added two RBIs and a double and freshman first baseman AJ Brosious had a pair of RBIs.

Freshman Rodney Berger made the start on the mound for the Greyhounds and registered a pair of strikeouts in the first three innings of the game. Sophomore Kevin Brandt tossed an inning while senior Kevin Shields had one strikeout in 1.2 innings. Sophomore Kyler Serman picked up his first winning of the season with one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning while junior Connor Morro registered his second save of the year by pitching the final 2.2 innings with just one hit allowed.

The Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

The Blue and Grey scored in the top of the third frame to knot the score at 1-1 when Markowski connected on a 3-1 pitch for his second home run of the season and 16th of his career to move into sole possession of second place in the Moravian record book.

Albright took the lead right back with three runs in the bottom of the third, and the Lions added a tally in the fourth for a 5-1 edge.

The Greyhounds would score twice in the top of the fifth frame to pull within a run at 5-4. Csencsits reached on a one-out error and raced all the way home on an RBI double from Kulig, hit team-leading 10th double of the spring. After Markowski drew a walk and another out, Brosious connected on a two-RBI single to bring in Kulig and Markowski.

Moravian scored four more times in the top of the sixth to take an 8-5 lead. Junior catcher Ian Luberti led off with a single and senior Andrew Koenig came on to pinch run. Senior third baseman Tim Heard connected on a one-out single before Csencsits ripped his 100th career hit to plate and tie the game. Csencsits joins Markowski, Kulig and senior left fielder Mike Mittl in the 100-hit club. Markowski followed with a two-RBI double to bring in Heard and Csencsits while Philipps finished off the inning with a pinch-hit RBI single to score Markowski.

Albright answered with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to move back ahead 9-8.

The Blue and Grey scored three times in the top of the seventh to take the lead for good at 11-9. Sophomore shortstop Michael Miceli drew a leadoff walk before singles by Koenig and Palummo loaded the bases. Heard drew an RBI base on balls to bring in Miceli while Csencsits connected on an RBI sacrifice fly to score Koenig with the go-ahead run. Kulig finished off the inning with an RBI single that scored Palummo.

The Lions tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh before Morro entered the game and closed out the victory.

Moravian is slated to continue an eight-game road trip on Wednesday, April 3 with a non-conference game at Keystone College beginning at 4:00 p.m.
