Hounds Complete Landmark Conference Series Sweep of Elizabethtown at Gillespie Field

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team baseball team took both games of a Landmark Conference doubleheader versus Elizabethtown College at Gillespie Field Sunday by scores of 2-1 and 8-3 to complete the three-game series sweep of the Blue Jays.

he Greyhounds, now 9-7 overall and 5-1 in Landmark Conference action, had three hits in the opener with senior catcher Chase Rogers, junior second baseman Ian Csencsits and sophomore shortstop Michael Miceli all had one hit with Csencsits adding an RBI.

Senior Rhett Jacoby made the start on the mound in the opener and struck out two batters in two innings of work. Freshman Scott Poulson tossed four innings to earn his first collegiate victory while junior Connor Morro earned his first save of the season with three strikeouts in his inning of work.

The Blue Jays would open the scoring with a run in the top of the fifth inning for a 1-0 lead.

Moravian responded in the bottom of the fifth. Rogers hit an infield single and Miceli reached on a bunt single for the first two hits of the game by the Blue and Grey. After a wild pitch, junior right fielder Carmine Palummo connected on an RBI sacrifice fly to bring Rogers across the plate with the tying run. Csencsits hit an RBI single up the middle as Miceli scored to give Moravian a 2-1 lead.

The Hounds knocked out 12 hits in the second game with Miceli and senior left fielder Mike Mittl each going 2-for-4. Mittl added a pair of RBIs while Csencsits and senior third baseman Tim Heard had doubles and senior catcher Andrew Koenig added two RBIs.

Senior Evan Kulig started on the mound in game two and improved to 2-1 on the season as he allowed three runs on five hits and three walks to go with six strikeouts in 7.1 innings of action. Senior Tyler Caraway tossed the final 1.2 innings with a strikeout and a hit.

Moravian jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Csencsits doubled down the right field line with two outs and raced home on an RBI single by Kulig, his 150th career hit, making him the 12th player in school history to reach the milestone.

The Greyhounds added two runs in the bottom of the third to extend the advantage to 3-0. Palummo led off with single and scored on an RBI double down the left field line by Heard. Mittl would put down a two-out bunt single as Heard raced across the plate.

The Blue and Grey added five runs in the bottom of the fifth frame to push the edge to 8-0. Heard drew a one-out walk and moved up when Csencsits reached on an error. Kulig reached on a fielder's choice and a throwing error on the play allowed Heard to race home. Mittl followed with an RBI single through the left side as Csencsits scored, and Kulig crossed the plate when senior center fielder Austin Markowski hit an RBI fielder's choice. Koenig ripped a two-RBI single up the middle as Mittl and Markowski both scored.

Elizabethtown scored its three runs in the top of the eighth inning.

The Hounds are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, March 27 when the squad continues its 10-game home stand with a non-conference game versus Penn State Berks beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Gillespie Field.
