Hounds Fall Late to NJCU in 2019 Home Opener at Gillespie Field

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team allowed a run in the top of the ninth inning to break a tie as the Greyhounds fell to visiting New Jersey City University, 3-2, in non-conference action as the Hounds began their 2019 home schedule and a 10-game home stand at Gillespie Field Tuesday afternoon.

Moravian had seven hits in the contest with senior third baseman Tim Heard going 2-for-3 and senior first baseman Evan Kulig going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI.

Freshman Scott Poulson made the start on the mound for the Greyhounds and allowed two runs on three hits and three walks to go with six strikeouts in five innings of action. Sophomore Kyle Serman tossed an inning while sophomore Rodney Berger recorded a pair of strikeouts in 2.1 innings of action. Junior Connor Morro tossed the final two-thirds of an inning with two strikeouts.

The Blue and Grey jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Junior second baseman Ian Csencsits connected on a two-out triple to right center field, and he scored on an RBI double to left center by Kulig.

The Hounds extended the advantage to 2-0 with another run in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman designated hitter AJ Brosious led off with a walk and raced to third on a double down the right field line by sophomore shortstop Michael Miceli. Brosious raced home when junior right fielder Carmine Palummo reached on an error.

The Gothic Knights would knot the score at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning, and NJCU scored on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth to take the lead.

Moravian is scheduled to continue its home stand on Wednesday, March 20 when the squad hosts Montclair State University in a non-conference game at Gillespie Field with first pitch set for 4:00 p.m.
