Hounds Score Eight Runs Late in Landmark Conference Victory at Drew

MADISON, N.J. --- The Moravian College baseball team scored eight runs over the final three innings to earn 11-4 victory at Drew University Sunday in Landmark Conference action to complete the conference opening series.

The Greyhounds, now 5-6 overall and 2-1 in Landmark Conference action after winning the weekend series, had 15 hits with junior second baseman Ian Csencsits going 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while senior third baseman Tim Heard was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Senior pitcher/designated hitter Evan Kulig went 2-for-4 with a double while senior left fielder Mike Mittl, sophomore shortstop Michael Miceli and freshman first baseman AJ Brosious were all 2-for-5 with Brosious driving in three runs, scoring twice and hitting a homer. Senior catcher Andrew Koenig added three RBIs and a double.

Kulig made the start on the mound and improved to 1-1 on the year after allowing three runs, just one earned on six hits and a walk to go with nine strikeouts. Freshman Eddie Olsen came on to pitch the final 2.1 innings as he allowed one run on three hits to go with a walk and two strikeouts in his first career save.

The Rangers jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning.

The Blue and Grey would score three times in the top of the third inning to move in front, 3-2. Senior center fielder Austin Markowski was hit by a pitch with one out and Csencsits followed with a single. After a ground out by Kulig to move the runners up, Markowski would score on a balk. Brosious then connected on his first collegiate home run, a two-run homer to right field.

Drew tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Moravian moved back in front, 5-3, in the top of the seventh frame with two runs. Miceli led off with a bunt single and would race home from third on a bunt by Csencsits. Kulig followed with an RBI single as Markowski raced home from second after drawing a walk before the bunt by Csencsits.

The Blue and Grey added another run in the top of the eighth when Heard drew a walk, stole second and raced home on an RBI single from Miceli to make it a 6-3 advantage.

The Hounds plated five runs in the top of the ninth to push the lead to 11-3. Csencsits singled with one out and moved to third on a double by Kulig. Brosious hit an RBI infield single that brought in Csencsits while Mittl connected on an RBI bunt single to chase Kulig across the plate. Heard drew a walk and then Koenig would clear the bases with a three-RBI double down the left field line as Brosious, Mittl and Heard all scored.

The Greyhounds, who have played their first 11 games of the year on the road, are scheduled to begin a 10-game home stand at Gillespie Field when the squad hosts New Jersey City University on Tuesday, March 19 with first pitch slated for 4:00 p.m.
