Washington and Lee Tops Greyhounds at Fuzzy Williams Classic

BETHANY, W.Va. --- Sophomore midfielder Zach Colby scored a pair of goals to lead the Washington and Lee University men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Moravian College in the opening match of the Fuzzy Williams Memorial Classic hosted by Bethany College Friday, and it was also the first contest of the 2012 season for both schools.

Junior midfielder Parker Wolfinger opened the scoring for the Generals when he deflected in a corner kick after the ball became free off of a Moravian defender in the sixth minute.  Colby added an unassisted goal in the 33rd minute before scoring off of a pass from Wolfinger in the 57th minute.

The Greyhounds nearly scored in the 38th minute when freshman defender Matthew Gandy had a shot on a corner kick from freshman defender Austin Niekrasz that had to be cleared away by a Washington and Lee defender.  Moravian totaled five shots in the match with three on goal including shots by sophomore midfielder Lewis Cooper and freshman midfielder Seth Reynolds.  Junior forward Jeffrey Algor led Moravian with two shots in the contest.

Greyhounds' senior goalie Mike Brand made five saves in the match as the Generals had a 14-5 edge in shots.  Washington & Lee sophomore goalie Albert Civitarese had two saves.

Moravian will finish its trip to West Virginia with a match versus Stevenson University on Saturday, September 1st at 1:00 p.m.
