Men's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw with Delaware Valley

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College and Delaware Valley College men's soccer teams played the final 16 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime scoreless to finish a non-conference contest at Moravian's HUB Quad in a 1-1, double-overtime draw Wednesday.

The Greyhounds, now 2-4-1 overall, would have two shots on goal in the first 2:11 of the match with a shot from senior forward John Pavia and a header by junior defender Jeffrey Algor that needed to be saved by Delaware Valley freshman goalie Chase Clement.  Moravian would get onto the scoreboard in the 12th minute when freshman midfielder Nicholas Blake  scored his first collegiate goal when he tapped in a crossing pass from sophomore midfielder Lewis Cooper

The Greyhounds had four chances to extend the lead with 11 minutes left in the first half with four shots; two by freshman forward Zachary Hickman in the span of 45 seconds with Clement making three saves and Algor hitting the post.

The Aggies, now 4-1-1 on the season, nearly tied the match just over three minutes into the second half when sophomore midfielder Steve Mannato slipped a shot just wide of the left post.  Delaware Valley would eventually tie the match in the 74th minute when senior midfielder Josh Burnside scored inside the right post off of a loose ball for his first goal of the season.  Both squads would get good scoring chances in the final 16 minutes of regulations but no one would find the net, sending the match to overtime.

Moravian dominated the first overtime session, recording seven shots while the Aggies had one.  In the second overtime, Delaware Valley would get off three shots while Moravian was limited to one.  The Greyhounds finished the contest with a 33-23 advantage in shots while both teams took eight corner kicks in 110 minutes of action.  Clement would record 14 saves for the Aggies while senior Mike Brand had two saves for the Greyhounds.  Moravian also had two team saves with two shots cleared off of the line by defenders.

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Saturday, September 22nd when the Greyhounds host The Catholic University of America in a 3:30 p.m. match on the HUB Quad.  The match will be the 2012 Landmark Conference opener for both squads.
