Darkness & Defense Lead Hounds to 0-0 Draw Against Scranton

Bethlehem, Pa.---The Moravian College men's soccer team took on Landmark Conference foe The University of Scranton Wednesday afternoon on HUB Quad in a battle of teams tied for fourth in the Landmark standings and fighting for postseason berths. The game would go into double overtime, but the officials would end the second of two 10 minute periods short due to darkness with just over two and a half minutes left to play with the scoreboard reading 0-0.

The Greyhounds had back-to-back shots in the first half by sophomore midfielder Saul Marcial and freshman midfielder/forward William Demmel in the seventh minute. Marical had his shot scooped up by the goal keeper and Demmel would miss just high.

The second half found junior forward Andrew Arcell on the attack in the 56th minute looking to give the Hounds the lead, but another save from the Scranton goalie kept the game scoreless. Freshman defender/midfielder Corey Klaskin missed just left on a header in the 68th minute.

About two minutes into the first extra session, sophomore defender Ian Larimer hit a shot from just outside the 18-yard box that put the keeper on his heels, but he just got his hands on it to knock it over the crossbar and give the Blue and Grey a corner. Moravian was unlucky in the first attempt but earned a second corner, unfortunately that too was cleared.

Scranton put a pair of shots on goal in the 107th and 108th minutes that were saved by junior goalkeeper Brian Boland. Just after Boland controlled the second shot, the officials deemed the match unsafe to finish due to darkness ending the match in a 0-0 draw. Boland made seven saves on the afternoon earning his eighth career shutout for the Greyhounds.

Moravian travels for a non-conference match on Saturday, October 25 at 1:00 p.m. against Centenary (N.J.) College.
