DALLAS, Pa. --- The Moravian University field hockey team overcame the tying goal with no time on the clock in regulation to earn a 2-1, double-overtime victory at Misericordia University Tuesday evening in the Greyhounds' first win of the 2023 campaign.
How It Happened
- The squads played a scoreless first quarter, and nearly the entire second quarter when Greyhound sophomore forward Gia Ambrosino put the ball in the cage just 45 seconds before the intermission off a pass from senior midfielder Sarah Bietka to send the Blue & Grey to halftime with a 1-0
- Neither squad scored in the third quarter, and the Hounds looked as if they might earn a shutout win. However, Misericordia would get a penalty corner with just three seconds left in the fourth period, and the Cougars netted the tying goal after the clock hit zero as the penalty corner played out
- Both teams had chances to break the deadlock in the first ten-minute overtime session, but no one found the cage to force a second overtime
- Moravian senior forward Hanna Leto broke the tie and gave the Greyhounds the victory with a goal 2:13 into the second extra session off of a pass from junior midfielder Savannah Sutter
Inside the Numbers
- Ambrosino's goal was the first of her collegiate career while Bietka garnered her first assist of the season and sixth of her career
- Leto netted her first goal of 2023 and the fifth in her career with her first game-winning goal while Sutter notched her second career assist
- Freshman goalie Maia Machado registered three saves for her first collegiate win
- The Cougars finished the night with a 14-7 edge in shots including 4-3 on goal and an 18-9 advantage in penalty corners
