Three Hounds Reach Milestones as Moravian Posts Two Five-Inning Victories at Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Moravian College softball team had three players reach milestones in the first game of two five-inning victories Thursday at the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Florida as the Greyhounds defeated Adrian (Mich.) College, 15-3, and Widener University, 8-0.

The Hounds, now 7-1 on the year, saw two players collected their 100th career hits and another reach 100 career runs scored in the opener versus Adrian. Junior third baseman Maddisen Bieber became the 49th Moravian softball player to reach 100 hits with a single in the first inning while junior second baseman Shannon Brogan hit the milestone in the fifth inning with a single. Junior catcher Brooke Wehr became the 13th Greyhound to score 100 runs when she crossed the plate in the third inning on a home run.

The Blue and Grey had 20 hits versus Adrian with senior center fielder Emily Stanilious and sophomore designated player Alexandria Scheeler both going 4-for-4 with Stanilious scoring three times and Scheeler adding three RBIs. Wehr was 3-for-4 with four runs, three RBIs and a homer while Bieber and senior first baseman Lauren Goetz were both 2-for-3 with Bieber adding two RBIs and Goetz contributing three RBIs, two runs and a homer. Brogan was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs.

Senior Paige Lesher improved to 3-1 in the circle, allowing three runs, two earned, to go with one strikeout in four innings of action. Sophomore Robin McCabe posted two strikeouts in one inning.

Moravian jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Wehr reached on a fielder's choice and raced home from second on an RBI single by Scheeler.

The Hounds then scored eight runs in the top of the second frame for a 9-0 edge. Goetz led off with a double and scored on an RBI single from Stanilious before an RBI single from Wehr scored senior outfielder Samantha O'Keefe. Bieber, Scheeler and Brogan all had RBI singles before Goetz connected on a three-run homer to center field, her second home run of the season and 16th of her career.

The Greyhounds made it an 11-0 game with two runs in the top of the third when Stanilious doubled with two outs and Wehr followed with a two-run homer, her second of the year and 21st career home run. Adrian would score three times in the bottom of the third.

The Blue and Grey finished off the scoring in the top of the fifth with four more runs for the NCAA run-rule. Bieber drove in Stanilious with an RBI sacrifice fly while Scheeler brought in Wehr with an RBI single. Freshman catcher/infielder Meg Hanily ripped a two-RBI double in her first collegiate at-bat to bring in the final two runs of the game as Brogan and freshman pinch runner Gianna Lancellotti.

Moravian posted its first shutout of the season in game two versus Widener as Scheeler scattered four hits to go with one strikeout as she improved to 4-0 in the circle.

The Hounds added seven hits in the contest with freshman shortstop Alexis Agrapides and Wehr both going 2-for-3 with Agrapides driving in three runs and Wehr hitting another home run.

The Blue and Grey jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Agrapides connected on a two-out, two-RBI single and Smith scored on an error. The Greyhounds doubled the advantage to 6-0 with three more runs in the bottom of the third frame. O'Keefe and Agrapides each had RBI singles in the frame while sophomore right fielder Victoria Smith drove in a run with an RBI fielder's choice.

Moravian finished off the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Wehr led off the inning with a solo home run, the 22nd of her career, and Scheeler scored the final run of the day on an error.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to finish their trip to the PFX Spring Games on Friday, March 6 when the squad played Lebanon Valley College at 10:00 a.m. and Plymouth State (N.H.) University at 12:15 p.m.
