READING, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team began its 2018-19 season with a 58-45 victory at Albright College in non-conference action on the road Thursday evening.
"Getting the first win on the road is a great way to start the season," noted Head Coach Mary Beth Spirk as she begins her 32nd season leading the Greyhounds. "Our effort on the defensive end was outstanding. Hopefully we will learn and continue to work to improve each game."
Junior guard Karlie Brogan tossed in a career-high 21 points to go with eight rebounds and a pair of assists while junior guard Maddie Capuano had 19 points, three rebounds and three assists. Sophomore guard Jennifer McClave and freshman guard Alix Buskirk each scored four points while junior forward Nadine Ewald added two points, six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
Senior guard Emily Walls and senior guard Tyis Mullen each netted three points. Sophomore forward Jordan Beneducci contributed two rebounds and two points while senior forward Ariana Caiati added five rebounds in her first career start. Senior guard/forward Caitlin Flanagan grabbed a pair of rebounds.
The Hounds were 21-of-60 from the floor including 7-of-16 beyond the three-point line as Brogan was a perfect 3-for-3 beyond the arc. Moravian was 9-for-14 at the foul line while Albright held a 40-39 edge on the boards. The Blue and Grey did force the Lions into 21 turnovers while the Greyhounds committed just 14 turnovers.
Brogan opened the scoring with a three-pointer and a jumper for a 5-0 lead but Albright would come back to knot the score at 8-8 with 3:14 left in the first quarter. Moravian answered with an 11-2 run to end the period with Capuano sinking a jumper to beat the clock for a 19-10 advantage after 10 minutes of play.
Beneducci pushed the lead into double digits at 23-12 with a lay-up three minutes into the second quarter, and the Hounds' advantage reached 14 points, 28-14, on a three-pointer from Capuano. The Blue and Grey would eventually head to the locker room with a 30-20 edge.
The Hounds used a 10-0 run in the third quarter to take a 42-22 lead on a three-pointer by Mullen with 4:36 left in the period while the Lions scored the final seven points of the frame to trail 42-29 after 20 minutes of action. Capuano opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer as the Greyhounds kept their advantage over 13 points for the entire final period.
Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, November 14 when the squad hosts Penn State Lehigh Valley in the Greyhounds' home opener in Johnston Hall with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m.
