BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team dropped a 72-51 decision to No. 12 The University of Scranton in Landmark Conference action in Johnston Hall Wednesday evening.
The Greyhounds fall to 14-8 overall and 6-56 in Landmark Conference play after the contest. The Blue and Grey had two players with junior guard Maddie Capuano netting 13 points to go with three rebounds as she moved up to 14th in school history with 1,159 points while freshman guard Kayla Yoegel scored a career high 11 points to go with four boards.
Junior forward Nadine Ewald contributed seven points and nine rebounds as she became the 13th player in school history to reach 600 career boards. Junior guard Karlie Brogan had five points and seven rebounds, and freshman guard Linnaea Leister also scored five points. Sophomore guards Sarah Donati and Jennifer McClave each tossed in four points while freshman guard Alix Buskirk added two points. Senior guard/forward Caitlin Flanagan blocked three shots while junior guard Brooke Santy added three rebounds and senior forward Ariana Caiati had two boards.
Moravian was 18-for-61 from the field, 3-for-13 on three-pointers and 12-for-16 at the foul line. Both squads had 38 rebounds in the game with the Greyhounds holding a 17-10 edge on the offensive glass.
The Royals opened the scoring with two baskets before Ewald drained a pair of free throws and McClave hit a jumper to knot the score at 4-4. Yoegel hit a jumper to make it 6-6 before Scranton pulled back in front and led 14-11 after 10 minutes of action.
The Royals scored the first seven points of the second quarter to build a 21-11 lead. After being down 12 on two occasions, the Greyhounds got back within six points, 31-25, on a jumper from Capuano with 27 seconds left in the half. Scranton would get a late three-pointer to head to the locker room with a 34-25 advantage.
Ewald opened the scoring in the second half, but the Royals would outscore Moravian, 25-11, in the quarter to lead 59-36 after 30 minutes of play. The closest the Blue and Grey would get in the fourth quarter was 18 points late after two free throws from Buskirk.
The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, February 9 when the squad hosts Goucher College in a Landmark Conference game beginning at 2:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall. The Hounds will wear their pink uniforms Saturday for the annual Paly4Kay game to raise money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, and Moravian's annual Alumni game will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday in Johnston Hall.
