SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team finished the first half of the 2018-19 Landmark Conference season with an 87-68 victory at Susquehanna University Wednesday evening.
The Greyhounds hit the midway point of the Landmark Conference double round robin with a 4-3 record and the win improved the Hounds to 12-6 on the year.
Moravian had three players in double figures let by junior guard Maddie Capuano, who had a game-high 32 points, her fourth 30-plus point game of the season, to go with three rebounds and a pair of assists as she moved up to 21st in school history with 1,091 points. Junior forward Nadine Ewald added 24 points, seven rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals while senior guard Emily Walls had 11 points, three rebounds and two steals.
Junior guard Karlie Brogan pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds to go with seven points and two assists while senior forward Ariana Caiati and sophomore guard Jennifer McClave each had four points and two rebounds with McClave dishing out a career-high seven assists and Caiati adding two assists. Senior guard/forward Caitlin Flanagan had five rebounds and two points while freshman guard Kayla Yoegel added two points and freshman guard Hannah Fenstermacher scored one point.
The Blue and Grey had their second straight strong shooting performance as the squad connected on 33-of-62 field goal attempts, 8-of-15 three-pointers and 13-of-19 free throws. Moravian also had a 42-32 advantage on the boards while dishing out 22 assists.
Ewald scored the first points of the game, and after the River Hawks knotted the score at 2-2, Capuano hit a jumper at the 9:00 mark to give the Greyhounds the lead for good at 4-2. McClave hit a jumper for a 22-14 advantage with 1:02 left in the first quarter and Ewald hit a late free throw as the Blue and Grey led 23-17 after 10 minutes of action.
Capuano hit a three-pointer to start the second quarter and Walls followed with a jumper and a three-pointer to stretch the Moravian lead to 31-17 a minute into the period. The Hounds edge would briefly dip back below 10 points but two baskets by Capuano in the final minute of the half sent the Greyhounds to the locker room with a 45-29 lead.
Ewald scored twice to start the third quarter to make it a 20-point, and a jumper by Flanagan had Moravian leading by 21 points before heading to the final quarter with a 66-47 edge. The Hounds would get the lead to 29 points, 82-53, with six minutes left in the game before scoring just five more points the rest of the way as they earned the 19-point victory.
The Hounds are slated to return to the hardwood in Johnston Hall on Saturday, January 26 when Moravian hosts The Catholic University of America in a Landmark Conference game tipping off at 2:00 p.m.
