Greyhounds Suffer First Setback of Shortened 2021 Season, Falling to Scranton in Johnston Hall

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team dropped its first game of the shortened 2021 season Tuesday evening, falling to visiting The University of Scranton, 56-47, in Johnston Hall as the Greyhounds, now 3-1 overall and 2-1 in Landmark Conference action, were playing for the third time in five days while the Royals were seeing their first action on the winter. 

How It Happened

  • The Royals jumped out to a 5-0 lead before sophomore guard Morgan Amy scored for Moravian. Trailing 9-5, the Greyhounds finished the first quarter with a 9-0 run as Morgan Amy connected on a three-point play with nine seconds on the clock to give the Hounds a 14-9 edge
  • The Blue and Grey kept the lead early in the second quarter with freshman forward Gracie Hezel  putting Moravian up 18-15 with 7:28 left in the period. However, Scranton scored the next eight points and would head to the locker room with a 26-22 advantage
  • Freshman forward Sam Osorio started the scoring with a short jumper in the third quarter for the Hounds, but the Royals went on a 15-4 run to pull ahead 41-28 and eventually lead 43-35 after 30 minutes of action
  • Moravian was unable to get any closer than eight points in the final quarter 

Firsts for the Hounds

  • Sophomore guard Madison Amy reached 20 points for the first time in a collegiate game, netting a career and game-high 22 points

Inside the Numbers

  • Madison Amy also had a career-best eight steals in the game
  • Osorio had her second double-digit rebound contest of her career as she grabbed 10 boards
  • Moravian struggled from the field, making just 16-of-65 field goal attempts (24.6 percent). In contrast, the Greyhounds had shot over 37 percent in each of their three wins to start the season. It also marked the first game of the year the Hounds failed to reach 60 points on offense
  • The Blue and Grey limited themselves to just eight turnovers in the contest while forcing Scranton into 18 miscues
